This study examined teachers' attitudes and beliefs towards differentiated instruction, their confidence in being able to meet the needs of diverse learners, and the strategies they used to differentiate instruction for their students. It also examined the impact of using differentiated instruction on the achievement of at-risk students in a heterogeneous middle school classroom setting. Ten middle school teachers from a school in southeastern Pennsylvania who had taken part in a staff development program in differentiated instruction, provided by the school district in which they worked, took part in the study. A combination of surveys, classroom observations, participant interviews, and standardized achievement scores were used as instruments for this study. Data revealed that these teachers had a positive attitude towards diverse learners and differentiated instruction. Teachers were confident in their ability to differentiate instruction and used a wide variety of strategies to do so. These teachers felt supported by the administration and their peers in their efforts to differentiate instruction. They also indicated that differentiated instruction had a positive impact on the achievement of their at-risk students. A trend towards improved achievement for all students was observed.
