France and Great Britain, so close geographically but separated by language, culture and history, had been exchanging merchandise, visitors, rulers and ideas for hundreds of years before the eighteenth century. The flow of traffic only quickened during this period, and became a flood, in the direction of Great Britain, during the decade following the Revolution. While certain of these exchanges, such as Voltaire’s sojourn abroad, have been studied in detail, others are coming into focus only as scholars study secondary figures in the host country and the interactions of various groups with its citizens. British-French Exchanges in the Eighteenth Century gathers together fourteen recent essays by scholars from Great Britain and the United States who have examined various parameters of the subject. Correspondences and translations are obvious forms of cultural sharing and are in play in many of the essays. Others recount and analyse the stories of persons who actually visited the other country in circumstances ranging from pure tourism to emigration to a hostage exchange. A final group of essays treats intellectual influences in realms as diverse as encyclopaedism, cultural analysis, connoisseurship, and cosmopolitanism in the arts. The volume is appropriate for collections in history, literature, and culture. With their broken lines and hasty brushwork, sketches acquired enormous ideological and aesthetic power during the Romantic period in England. Whether publicly displayed or serving as the basis of a written genre, these rough drawings played a central role in the cultural ferment of the age by persuading audiences that less is more. The Visual and Verbal Sketch in British Romanticism investigates the varied implications of sketching in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century culture. Calling on a wide range of literary and visual genres, Richard C. Sha examines the shifting economic and aesthetic value of the sketch in sources ranging from auction catalogs and sketching manuals to novels that employed scenes of sketching and courtship. He especially shows how sketching became a double-edged accomplishment for women when used to define "proper" femininity. Sha's work offers fresh readings of Austen, Gilpin, Wordsworth, and Byron, as well as less familiar writers, and provides sophisticated interpretations of visual sketches. As the first full-length work about sketching during the Romantic era, this volume is a rich interdisciplinary study of both representation and gender.

Discovery in Haste is the first book to survey the English printed medical dictionary, a greatly under-researched area, from Andrew Boorde's Breviary of Helthe of 1547 to Benjamin Lara’s surgical dictionary of 1796. The book begins with Andrew Boorde’s Breviary of Helthe of 1547, moves on to medical glossaries, which were produced through the whole period, the ‘physical dictionaries’ of the mid-seventeenth century which first employed ‘dictionary’ in the title, the translation into English of Steven Blancard’s dictionary, Latin medical dictionaries of the late seventeenth century by Thomas Burnet and John Cruso, the influential dictionary by John Quincy which dominated the eighteenth century, surgical dictionaries through to that by Benjamin Lara, Robert James’s massive encyclopaedic dictionary and the work derived from it by John Barrow, as well as George Motherby’s dictionary of 1775. The characteristics of each are discussed and their inter-relationships explored. Attention is also paid to the printing history and the way the publishers influenced the works and, where appropriate, to the influence each had on succeeding dictionaries. This book is the first to locate medical dictionaries within the history of lexicography.

Abstract This study describes an antique watercolor box from Reeves with 24 colors in cakes, dating around 1800. A second box from T. Reeves & Son dating between 1790-1799 is added and described. A concise chronological overview shows which family members of the Reeves’ family and their associates lead the firm during the Regency period. Old city maps of London indicate the various shop locations and a brief look is taken at early 18th century shops of color men and the production of watercolor paint in cakes. The dating of the watercolor box and its contents raise a number of questions. To position the box with contents in the correct period, an overview of available trade cards is consulted. Stamps on cakes are linked to the various family members, who led the Reeves firm in the Regency period.Based on the contents of comparable watercolor boxes relationships are established with user groups, quality criteria of the paint and color theories in the 17th and 18th century. An attempt has been made the 17th and 18th century color theories, in which light refraction, the distinguishing of colors and physical laws are important, to connect with pigments, tinctures, and mixing paint colors to make visual art works possible. Overviews of pigments and paint tincture by a number of authoritative authors in the 17th and 18th centuries are highlighted. The hidden selection rules of the colors and their conscious positioning in the box are discussed. Instructional illustrated is the visually completing of the missing paint cakes. Also included are some overviews of the selection of watercolor paint cakes in comparable boxes. The restored boxes and their contents are illustrated in a number of images. Finally, each of the 24 color cakes in the box of 1799-1800 is treated by their description in the 18th century literature. An extensive overview, with mainly 17th and 18th century sources on pigments, dyes, paint preparation, color theories, etc., is affixed. Added are contemporary authors who have written about the Reeves firm. Finally, nine attachments are available about a scheme of painting substances by Robert Dossie, the management structure of the Reeves firm till the 20th century, a pricelist of Robert Ackermann's paints in 1818, a text fragment in Ackermann’s Repository of Arts (1813), a reconstructed advertisment text in the Derby Mercury of April 10, 1794, a recepy for a binding mixture to make watercolor cakes, an article about an other way of making watercolor cakes of dough, text from W.T. Whitley about ‘Artists and their Friends in England’ during the Regency period and a list of authorities in the 18th-century literature on colors in the form of tinctures, based on natural resources and natural solvents and binders.
