Designing Speed in the Racehorse is an indispensable reference by Ken McLean, one of the world's foremost bloodstock advisors and pedigree experts. McLean discusses genetic affinities and pedigree patterns, analyzes the pedigrees of important sires and ancestors to isolate elements of speed and stamina, explains what characteristics to look for in a sire, and updates the elite mare list. Breeders will be especially interested in McLean's analysis of the conformation of many of the breed's most illustrious sires and the physical attributes and faults they passed on to their progeny. Best of all, he tells the current sire and dam lines most likely to produce quality racehorses. With his recommendations at hand, today's Thoroughbred breeder has an edge in the competitive world of racing.

Written by one of the world’s leading racehorse veterinary clinicians, it sets out best practice standards of diagnosis and management of all the major conditions likely to be encountered in racehorse clinical practice, as well as comprehensively reviewing subjects as diverse as pre-purchase assessment and exercise physiology. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and introduces new chapters on a range of topics including injury risk assessment and electrolyte and fluid therapy, expanded sections on nutrition, rehabilitation and sales radiography as well as an array of new images and ready reference charts. The Racehorse: A Veterinary Manual remains an invaluable resource for both clinicians and non-veterinarians in the racing industry.

Over 20 experts from around the world share their wisdom on a topic of central relevance to all equine practitioners and the equine community generally. Both engineering and human living take place in a messy world, one chock full of unknowns and contingencies. Design reasoning is the way engineers cope with real-world contingency. Because of the messiness, books about engineering design cannot have ideal solutions printed in the back in the same way that mathematics textbooks can. Design reasoning does not produce a single, ideally correct answer to a given problem but rather generates a wide variety of rival solutions that vie against each other for their relative level of satisfactoriness. A reasoning process analogous to design is needed in ethics. Since the realm of interpersonal relations is itself a fluid and highly contingent real-world affair, design reasoning offers the promise of a useful paradigm for ethical reasoning. This volume undertakes two tasks. First, it employs design reasoning to illustrate how technological artifacts can be assessed for their inherent moral properties. Second, it uses the design paradigm as a means for bringing engineering ethics into conversation with Christian theology in order to show how each can be for the other a catalyst for the revolutionary task of living by design.
