Die von der Sto-Stiftung unterstützte Buchreihe „DesignBuild REFLECT" beleuchtet theoriebildende und projektübergreifende Fragestellungen der Lehr- und Lernmethode „DesignBuild“. Als erstes der auf vier Bücher angelegten Reihe ist nun „DesignBuild_joint perspectives“ erschienen. In diesem Buch erörtern die Autorinnen und Autoren eine gemeinsame DesignBuild-Hypothese anhand des Spannungsfeldes zwischen gesellschaftlicher Transformation, Architekturausbildung und -produktion. An der Schnittstelle zwischen akademischem und nicht-akademischem Umfeld verknüpfen DesignBuild-Projekte ganz verschiedene Sichtweisen: Sie verbinden Elfenbeinturm mit Baustelle, CAD-Zeichenprogramm mit Kreissäge, Studierende mit nicht-universitären Kollaborationspartnerinnen und Kollaborationspartnern. Sie agieren im Spannungsfeld von Praxis, Forschung und Lehre. Vor diesem Hintergrund legt das Publikationsprojekt DesignBuild_joint perspectives seinen Fokus auf eine kollektive Reflektion über DesignBuild als Methode in der Architekturausbildung durch zwei der zentralen Akteurinnen und Akteure: Lehrende und Lernende. Das Buch beleuchtet die persönliche und geschichtliche Bedeutung von DesignBuild sowie die Herausforderungen, die sich für die Autorinnen und Autoren aus Intention und Realität ergeben. Basierend auf den Arbeiten und ausgehend von den Betrachtungsebenen der Verfassenden – als Studierende beziehungsweise Lehrende – erarbeitet das Team eine „joint perspective“, also eine gemeinsame Perspektive. In ihrem Buch erörtern die Autorinnen und Autoren eine gemeinsame DesignBuild-Hypothese anhand des Spannungsfeldes zwischen gesellschaftlicher Transformation, Architekturausbildung und -produktion, in dem DesignBuild agiert, und übersetzen sie in eine joint-perspective-Matrix.

DesignBuild is a method of instruction that students use to design and build actual projects at several architecture schools around the world, often in developing countries, but sometimes on their own doorsteps. With DesignBuild, students gain experience that goes far beyond planning and design. The focus is on temporary buildings and long-term projects, experimental approaches and interventions into infrastructures. With respect to the main aspects of research - dialogue - design - build, research contexts and processes of individual projects come under discussion. Constructive aspects and social exchange are also important. The book provides a critical overview of the most exciting DesignBuild projects worldwide.

Material published in this edition is compiled by Dr. Chris Yessios. While no attempt was made to group the articles, since each is quite unique, they can be viewed under a number of thematic categories. There are at least 7 articles that deal more or less directly with the use of digital tools for the generation of innovative forms. Another 8 articles present specific building designs and 5 more present specific urban design schemes. The common denominator for all is the use of the digital tools to create forms that are distinctly different from traditional forms. A group of some 6 papers specifically discusses and compares digital versus analogue methodologies. In all cases, the former are more persuasive. Fabrication or computer aided manufacturing (CAM) is represented by at least 3 papers, while hints of digital fabrication can be found in a number of other papers as well. 6 articles are directly concerned with education: either the theoretical ties of digital design to “ancient principals” or how to de- velop particular skills. The only paper from a high school elaborates on this topic. Finally, there are 5 articles that cannot be grouped with the above categories but would fit in a category possibly labeled “miscellaneous theories.” For example, “Transforming Habit” and “Interpreting Babel” would belong to such a category.
