Trees must not be planted any deeper than they have stood in the nursery; and, if the land is heavy or inclined to be wet, it is better to plant them still shallower. In good land that has been well plowed and harrowed it is a waste of time to dig very large holes. When the trees are set, if one-year-old stock, they should all be cut off to about twenty inches from the ground. This keeps the earth moist and of even temperature. After-culture. - Grass should not be allowed to grow about young trees or plants. The ground should be cultivated for a space of at least One foot outside the roots. If the ground is poor it should be enriched with surface applications of manure. Prun ing should be varied according to the condition of the tree, and the purpose of the planter; It should be done regularly every spring, before the buds swell any.
