Andocides was one of the ten Attic orators included in the “Alexandrian Canon” compiled in the third century BC. The son of Leogoras, Andocides belonged to the ancient Eupatrid family of the Kerykes, who traced their lineage to Odysseus and Hermes. He led a political life of misadventures, involving four exiles, numerous accusations, trials, acquittals and condemnations, all set against the turbulent backdrop of this pivotal period of the Athenian Empire. Although an unsuccessful politician, Andocides enjoyed a gift for vivid narrative and employed a simple and unembellished oratorical style. One of the ten Attic orators included in the Alexandrian Canon, Lysias was a prominent figure of Athens in the fifth century BC. A loyal supporter of democracy, he took the side of the democrats at Athens against the Thirty Tyrants, supplying shields and money. Following a political speech in accusation of the tyrant Eratosthenes, he became a busy professional speech writer for the law courts of Athens. He was highly regarded by Plato and Plutarch. Lysias’ extant 34 speeches are fluent, simple and graceful in style, yet notable for their vivid descriptions. They reveal Lysias as a passionate partisan, who was also a gentle and humorous man. The early sixth century historian Zosimus of Constantinople was conservative in his outlook, continuing to believe in the ancient pagan gods, even though he flourished more than a century after Constantine. His ‘New History’ offers a brief sketch of the history of the early Roman emperors from Augustus to Diocletian, before dealing more fully with the ascension of Constantius Chlorus and Galerius to the death of Theodosius I. The final books chart the events leading up to the sack of Rome in 410. Zosimus’ style is characterised as concise, clear and pure. His object was to account for the decline of the Roman Empire from the pagan point of view, blaming the rise of the new faith for the demise of the Roman world. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. Porphyry of Tyre was a third-century Neoplatonic philosopher and follower of Plotinus. He edited and published ‘The Enneads’, the only collection of his teacher’s work. Porphyry also wrote original works in Greek on a wide variety of topics, including philosophy, religion, vegetarianism, philology and science, while revealing a scholarly care in citing authorities. His influential work ‘Isagoge’, an introduction to logic and philosophy, was the standard textbook on logic throughout the Middle Ages. Surviving fragments of ‘Against the Christians’, which was condemned in 448 to be burned, marked him as a fierce critic of the new religion.
