Paul Elbourne defends the Fregean view that definite descriptions ('the table', 'the King of France') refer to individuals, and offers a new and radical account of the semantics of pronouns. He draws on a wide range of work, from Frege, Peano, and Russell to the latest findings in linguistics, philosophy of language, and psycholinguistics.

A memoir that studies positive definite functions on convex subsets of finite- or infinite-dimensional vector spaces. It studies representations of convex cones by positive operators on Hilbert spaces. It also studies the interplay between positive definite functions and representations of convex cones.

This volume focuses on the grammaticalization of the definite article in German. It contains eight empirically-based papers which examine individual stages of the grammaticalization path from its beginnings as a demonstrative to the definite article and beyond. Focusing on cognitive, pragmatic, semantic and syntactic factors, the contributions not only address the development from pragmatic to semantic definiteness, but also deal with functional and formal changes starting as soon as the linguistic unit has acquired the function of marking semantic definiteness. Based on corpora spanning the entire history of the German language, from Old High German (750-1050) to present-day German, the analyses challenge the traditional linear model of grammaticalization and provide alternative pathways. What all the contributions have in common is the idea that the main grammaticalization path is accompanied or crossed by several side roads which lead to different destinations such as preposition-article-clitics, generic usages or onymic articles.

We study these new Smarandache algebraic structures, which are defined as structures which have a proper subset which has a weak structure.A Smarandache Weak Structure on a set S means a structure on S that has a proper subset P with a weaker structure.By proper subset of a set S, we mean a subset P of S, different from the empty set, from the original set S, and from the idempotent elements if any.A Smarandache Strong Structure on a set S means a structure on S that has a proper subset P with a stronger structure.A Smarandache Strong-Weak Structure on a set S means a structure on S that has two proper subsets: P with a stronger structure, and Q with a weaker structure.

Given a partial symmetric matrix, the positive definite completion problem asks if the unspecified entries in the matrix can be chosen so as to make the resulting matrix positive definite. Applications include probability and statistics, image enhancement, systems engineering, geophysics, and mathematical programming. The positive definite completion problem can also be viewed as a mechanism for addressing a fundamental problem in Euclidean geometry: which potential geometric configurations of vectors (i.e., configurations with angles between some vectors specified) are realizable in a Euclidean space. The positions of the specified entries in a partial matrix are naturally described by a graph. The question of existence of a positive definite completion was previously solved completely for the restrictive class of chordal graphs and this work solves the problem for the class of cycle completable graphs, a significant generalization of chordal graphs. These are graphs for which knowledge of completability for induced cycles (and cliques) implies completability of partial symmetric matrices with the given graph.
Positive Definite Matrices

This book represents the first synthesis of the considerable body of new research into positive definite matrices. These matrices play the same role in noncommutative analysis as positive real numbers do in classical analysis. They have theoretical and computational uses across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including calculus, electrical engineering, statistics, physics, numerical analysis, quantum information theory, and geometry. Through detailed explanations and an authoritative and inspiring writing style, Rajendra Bhatia carefully develops general techniques that have wide applications in the study of such matrices. Bhatia introduces several key topics in functional analysis, operator theory, harmonic analysis, and differential geometry--all built around the central theme of positive definite matrices. He discusses positive and completely positive linear maps, and presents major theorems with simple and direct proofs. He examines matrix means and their applications, and shows how to use positive definite functions to derive operator inequalities that he and others proved in recent years. He guides the reader through the differential geometry of the manifold of positive definite matrices, and explains recent work on the geometric mean of several matrices. Positive Definite Matrices is an informative and useful reference book for mathematicians and other researchers and practitioners. The numerous exercises and notes at the end of each chapter also make it the ideal textbook for graduate-level courses.

This monograph deals with the mathematics of extending given partial data-sets obtained from experiments; Experimentalists frequently gather spectral data when the observed data is limited, e.g., by the precision of instruments; or by other limiting external factors. Here the limited information is a restriction, and the extensions take the form of full positive definite function on some prescribed group. It is therefore both an art and a science to produce solid conclusions from restricted or limited data. While the theory of is important in many areas of pure and applied mathematics, it is difficult for students and for the novice to the field, to find accessible presentations which cover all relevant points of view, as well as stressing common ideas and interconnections. We have aimed at filling this gap, and we have stressed hands-on-examples.
