This book is intended to honor all veterans for their sacrifices on the battlefields of the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. It further honors military police everywhere who have served America in the honorable tradition of military service, exemplifying high levels of esprit de corps. It brings recognition to one of the oldest units in America¿s military history. More specifically, this book recognizes and pays tribute to a small group of men: the MP Platoon of the 2nd Infantry Division who fought in Europe in World War II. From ¿D-Day Plus 1¿ (the day after the initial wave of troops came ashore) at Omaha Beach, through the defeat of Hitler and Nazi Germany, to their final destination of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, on May 7, 1945, and the conclusion of the war, this small group of men performed above and beyond their call of duty, earning the Meritorious Unit Service plaque for their contributions to the war effort. This MP unit had a large role in supporting and participating in combat operations and in the eventual defeat of a determined enemy.

Friendly fire incidents often disrupt the close and continuous combined arms cooperation so essential to success in modern combat, especially when that combat is conducted against a well armed, well trained, and numerically superior opponent. This study, by presenting selected examples in their historical settings, is intended only to explain a few of the most obvious types of friendly fire incidents and some of the causative factors associated with them. By directing the attention of commanders and staff officers responsible for the development, training, and employment of combat forces to the hitherto little explored problem of friendly fire incidents, this study is intended to generate interest in and solutions for the problems outlined. The scope of this study is limited to incidents involving US forces in World War II and Vietnam, although some evidence is available from other conflicts in the twentieth century has also been considered. In sum, this study can claim to be no more than a narrative exposition of selected examples. Although its conclusions must be considered highly speculative and tentative in nature, this study can be of substantial value to an understanding of the problem of friendly fire in modern war. Chapters one through 5 of this report discuss: Artillery Amicicide; Air Amicicide; Antiaircraft Amicicide; Ground Amicicide.

What can unfold from an engagement of feminist issues, concerns and practices with the geopolitical? How does feminism allow for a reconfiguration of how these two elements, the geo- and the -political, are understood and related? What kinds of objects can be located and put into motion? What kinds of relations can be drawn between these? What kinds of practice become valued? And, what is glossed or rendered absent in the process? In this thought-provoking and original contribution, Deborah P. Dixon cautions against the exhaustion of feminist geopolitics as a critique of both a classical and a critical geopolitics, and points instead to how feminist imaginaries of Self, Other and Earth allow for all manner of work to be undertaken. Importantly, one of the things they provide for is a reservoir of concerns, thoughts and practices that can be reappropriated to flesh out what a feminist geopolitics can be. While providing a much-needed, sustained interjection that draws out achievements to date, the book thus gestures forward to productive lines of inquiry and method. Grounded via a series of globally diverse case studies that traverse time as well as space, Feminist Geopolitics feels for the borders of geopolitical thought and practice by navigating four complex and corporeally-aware objects of analysis, namely flesh, bone, touch and abhorrence.

This unique book - the first of its kind exclusive on disorders of the scapula - is a concise but comprehensive summary of the evidence that will enable clinicians to understand the scapula from its functions to its dysfunctions and includes clinical guidelines and pearls to improve the clinician’s competencies for the treatment of shoulder disorders. Organized logically, the book opens with a review of the baseline mechanics and pathomechanics of the scapula, proceeds to evaluation, then describes in detail the association of the scapula with specific shoulder problems, including rotator cuff disease, labral injuries, glenohumeral and multidirectional instability, clavicle fractures, acromioclavicular joint separation, and shoulder arthrosis. Subsequent chapters cover scapular muscle detachment, neurological injuries and winging, scapular fractures and snapping scapula, in addition to basic and complex rehabilitation strategies. Each chapter includes a summary section with clinical pearls. In the past, in-depth research and expertise regarding the scapula was minimal, but a widening interest has resulted in a volume of literature that makes it possible and imperative that it be collected in a single volume. Disorders of the Scapula and Their Role in Shoulder Injury will be an excellent resource for orthopedic and trauma surgeons, residents and fellows.

The VIth World Symposium on Cardiac Pacing in Montreal 1979 opened with a course, meant to be an introduction for newcomers and an updating re fresher and link between the various fields of knowledge needed by experienced persons for cardiac pacing. Invited guest lecturers were selected for their world recognized expertise in the individual subjects. This book is a collection of the various presentations on historical, clinical, electrophysiological and technical aspects of cardiac pacing. Together they cover the fundamentals of cardiac stimulation. We hope that this book may become an introductory guide to the field of cardiac pacing and that it may contribute to a better understanding of the pacemaker system and a better treatment of the pacemaker patient. Claude C. Meere Hilbert J. Th. This book is a comprehensive overview of electrocardiography and the major effects of current cardiac pharmacological therapy on electrocardiography. The text is based on work presented at the International Symposium on Non-invasive Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy, held in May, 1987 at the University of Cologne. The theme of the book is to review, in broad clinical perspective the current state-of-the-art of electrocardiography as it pertains to standard electrocar diograms, exercise testing, ambulatory electrocardiography, electrocardiographic telemetry, and high resolution electrocardiography. Furthermore, advance!, in cardiac drug therapy in relation to diuretics, beta blocking drugs, antiarrhythmic agents and thrombolytic agents are reviewed. The emphasis of the conference and this book is to review the clinical state-of-the-art information and applications in this regard. In the initial section on electrocardiography, Dr. Spodick reviews our present day physiologic and pathophysiologic understanding of systolic time intervals, and how they are affected by a variety of cardiac disease states and pharmacologic agents. Dr. Ellestad examines problems and provides pragmatic tips on exercise testing in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, and advances in exercise scores and computer analysis. Dr. Graboys reviews the value of exercise testing in the diagnosis and management of patients with serious ventricular arrhythmias. Dr. Kellermann presents the complimentary role that exercise testing plays in com prehensive follow-up therapy of the cardiac patient, and the use of exercise for work and physical training. Detailed information concerning the interaction of cardiac rehabilitation and ventricular arrhythmias are examined.
