Excerpt from David Hummell Greer: Eighth Bishop of New York In the fall of 1919 the family of Bishop Greer asked me to undertake the writing of his Life. With grateful memory of his counsel and friendship, I gladly undertook the task. Because he himself was both modest and practical, the book has been made as brief as possible, that it might quickly reveal his personality. To his children, first of all, the book is indebted. Their gracious help served me at every turn. By their own wish they are rarely mentioned in these pages; but the reader will easily imagine how constantly they were the thought and joy of both Bishop and Mrs. Greer. Special thanks must be given to the Bishop's sister, Miss Elizabeth Yellott Greer. She put at my disposal memories of the early days, and was most kind in searching local records. Then, in spite of her protest, there must be recorded the debt which the book owes to Miss Ada Barr, who was Bishop Greer's secretary for twenty-six years.
