There are two worldviews about the source of life’s diversity. Creation implies a Creator as the intelligent cause, and evolution purports a material cause. So how can we resolve this complex issue? In a thought-provoking discourse on the reconciliation of the controversy between evolution and Creation, Dr. Ernest Brannon, retired biology professor and director of the Sciphre Institute, presents both sides of the issue to provide a fair assessment for those challenged by life’s origin and diversity. Within his treatise, Dr. Brannon summarizes information on the two worldviews about the diversity of life in order to demonstrate where there is common ground and to differentiate between the evidence and speculation between certainty and assumption. He also addresses reformation of the two worldviews, examines the scientific credibility of the Genesis account of Creation, and concludes with the essence of resolution. Darwin’s Resolution: Evolution or Creation is an engaging treatise committed to reconciling the concept of evolution with faith in God through a comprehensive examination of scientific evidence.

Charles Darwin has been at the center of white-hot public debate for more than a century. In Living With Darwin, Philip Kitcher stokes the flames swirling around Darwin's theory, sifting through the scientific evidence for evolution, Creation Science, and Intelligent Design, and revealing why evolution has been the object of such vehement attack. Kitcher first provides valuable perspective on the present controversy, describing the many puzzles that blocked evolution's acceptance in the early years, and explaining how scientific research eventually found the answers to these conundrums. Interestingly, Kitcher shows that many of these early questions have been resurrected in recent years by proponents of Intelligent Design. In fact, Darwin himself considered the issue of intelligent design, and amassed a mountain of evidence that effectively refuted the idea. Kitcher argues that the problem with Intelligent Design isn't that it's "not science," as many critics say, but that it's "dead science," raising questions long resolved by scientists. But Kitcher points out that it is also important to recognize the cost of Darwin's success--the price of "life with Darwin." Darwinism has a profound effect on our understanding of our place in the universe, on our religious beliefs and aspirations. It is in truth the focal point of a larger clash between religious faith and modern science. Unless we can resolve this larger issue, the war over evolution will go on.

No fight over what gets taught in American classrooms is more heated than the battle over humanity’s origins. For more than a century we have argued about evolutionary theory and creationism (and its successor theory, intelligent design), yet we seem no closer to a resolution than we were in Darwin’s day. In this thoughtful examination of how we teach origins, historian Adam Laats and philosopher Harvey Siegel offer crucial new ways to think not just about the evolution debate but how science and religion can make peace in the classroom. Laats and Siegel agree with most scientists: creationism is flawed, as science. But, they argue, students who believe it nevertheless need to be accommodated in public school science classes. Scientific or not, creationism maintains an important role in American history and culture as a point of religious dissent, a sustained form of protest that has weathered a century of broad—and often dramatic—social changes. At the same time, evolutionary theory has become a critical building block of modern knowledge. The key to accommodating both viewpoints, they show, is to disentangle belief from knowledge. A student does not need to believe in evolution in order to understand its tenets and evidence, and in this way can be fully literate in modern scientific thought and still maintain contrary religious or cultural views. Altogether, Laats and Siegel offer the kind of level-headed analysis that is crucial to finding a way out of our culture-war deadlock.

The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences address scientific topics of broad and current interest, cutting across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Each year, four or five such colloquia are scheduled, typically two days in length and international in scope. Colloquia are organized by a member of the Academy, often with the assistance of an organizing committee, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions with a hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. Colloquia presentations are recorded and posted on the National Academy of Sciences Sackler colloquia website and published on CD-ROM. These Colloquia are made possible by a generous gift from Mrs. Jill Sackler, in memory of her husband, Arthur M. Sackler.

"A book to help readers to understand the nature, history and passions behind the debate over scientific and religious versions of creation and human origins. " "Darwin and the Bible: The Cultural Confrontation" is about the history and nature of the disputes over human origins that arose with the publication of Charles Darwin's book, "Origin of Species" in 1859. Rather than focusing solely on the scientific background, the readings provide also the, historical, theological, social and political backgrounds of the debate. The essays in the reader are divided into three sets. The first set addresses how scientists and theologians have tried to resolve the apparent contradictions between Darwin and the Bible. The second set examines the historical and cultural settings that defined, often very differently, the parameters of the debate and the implications they had for both religion and science and the influence of the debate globally. The third set describes how the debate came to center on education and explores the impacts on both teachers and students. All but three of the essays were prepared especially for this volume. Each of the authors in this volume addresses the debate about evolution, either in the classroom or in their personal lives, in their own ways. They would not always agree with each other (even the editors, one a physical anthropologist, the other a cultural anthropologist, don't always agree). But the debate often serves as a window into our own culture. Science and religion are key and essential elements of our lives, regardless of how each of us individually perceives them; yet their influence is often contradictory and contentious. Students and teachers are provided with information to stimulate debate and discussion and to understand the cultural roots of the debate over Darwin and the Bible.

If Darwin were to examine the evidence today using modern science, would his conclusions be the same? Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, published over 150 years ago, is considered one of history’s most influential books and continues to serve as the foundation of thought for evolutionary biology. Since Darwin’s time, however, new fields of science have immerged that simply give us better answers to the question of origins. With a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard University, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is uniquely qualified to investigate what genetics reveal about origins. The Origins Puzzle Comes Together If the science surrounding origins were a puzzle, Darwin would have had fewer than 15% of the pieces to work with when he developed his theory of evolution. We now have a much greater percentage of the pieces because of modern scientific research. As Dr. Jeanson puts the new pieces together, a whole new picture emerges, giving us a testable, predictive model to explain the origin of species. A New Scientific Revolution Begins Darwin’s theory of evolution may be one of science’s “sacred cows,” but genetics research is proving it wrong. Changing an entrenched narrative, even if it’s wrong, is no easy task. Replacing Darwin asks you to consider the possibility that, based on genetics research, our origins are more easily understood in the context of . . . In the beginning . . . God, with the timeline found in the biblical narrative of Genesis. There is a better answer to the origins debate than what we have been led to believe. Let the revolution begin! About the Author Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is a scientist and a scholar, trained in one of the most prestigious universities in the world. He earned his B.S. in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. As an undergraduate, he researched the molecular control of photosynthesis, and his graduate work involved investigating the molecular and physiological control of adult blood stem cells. His findings have been presented at regional and national conferences and have been published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Blood, Nature, and Cell. Since 2009, he has been actively researching the origin of species, both at the Institute for Creation Research and at Answers in Genesis.
