Starting from the early experiments, this detailed presentation, containing more than 500 references, provides a comprehensive review on current-induced nonequilibrium phenomena in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors, leading the reader from the fundamentals to the most recent research results. Experiments on monocrystalline filaments (whiskers) - including those obtained by the author - are compared with results on long thin film microbridges and related species and interpreted within the theoretical framework. Instructions on experimental techniques are given and yet unresolved problems are discussed. The book is well suited as an introduction for the novice and as a handbook for the active researcher.

This report presents the results of a study on the current-induced breakdown of superconductivity in a quasi-one-dimensional filament. This report has investigated the effects of a magnetic field H on nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation processes in superconductors by analyzing the I-V characteristics of long tin microbridges in a parallel field near T sub c(H). In the theoretical studies, using a generalized two-fluids picture to describe a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor near T sub c (for H equal 0), a heuristic derivation for a set of equations governing the temporal and spatial evolution of the charge imbalance (or branch imbalance) in the quasiparticles is provided. A novel consequence of the model is a prediction of intrinsic hysteresis in the dc current-voltage relation. The model also provides a convenient framework for dealing with ac effects in PSC's, including resonance and synchronization in systems of closely-spaced PSC's and microbridges.

The great breakthroughs in the science and technology of superconducting and magnetic materials in recent years promoted many outstanding representatives of various scientific disciplines (physics, chemistry and materials science) to present their latest findings in a scientific atmosphere of the highest standard at the MSM-99 conference. Over 200 eminent scientists from 50 countries gathered to discuss the physics, materials science and application of magnetic and superconducting materials, and to foster research and development collaborations between the scientists and technologists of the regional countries and also with the international scientific community. The main topics of this book are the physics, materials science and application of magnetic and superconducting materials having a close relationship between the strong correlated electron system and magnetism.

Fermi Surfaces of Low-Dimensional Organic Metals and Superconductors is an introduction to quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional organic metals and a review of the current knowledge on the electronic structure of these materials. The principal structural, electronic, and superconducting properties are described and illustrated with many examples. The book introduces the basic theoretical concepts necessary for the understanding of the experimental techniques and reviews in detail recent results in the investigation of the Fermi surface topology. The book is intended both as an introduction and as a reference book for active researchers.

This book introduces the main concepts of nonequilibrium phenomena in superconductors. The authors cover both experimentally well-understood topics and problems which physicists could challenge more in view of current theoretical understanding. Some of these topics include thermoelectric phenomena, influence of laser radiation as well as fluctuations in superconductors.
