A few years ago in the book, Die physiologische Entwicklung des Kindes. Vorlesungen ilber funktionelle Padologie (Springer-Verlag, 1959), the then-current state of knowledge in the field of pedology was compiled by pediatricians from the most diverse countries. In contrast to the term "pediatrics," the word "pedo logy" was used to refer to the physiology of the child, because although the physiological development of the child is intimately associated with disturbances of body functions, both are different from experience with adults. Pedology is more comprehensive than physiology, in that it covers both the physiological and psychological development of the normal child. Favorable response to the above-mentioned book stimulated the project of documenting further progress in pedology at certain intervals, especially by authors who themselves had contributed substantially to these advances. In 1965 and 1968, respectively, two volumes under the title Fortschritte der Pado logie were published by Springer-Verlag-Berlin-Heidelberg-New York. 'Pediatrics and Perinatology: The Scientific Basis' addresses the molecular biology, biochemistry and physiological mechanisms by which the fetus, newborn infant, and child develop normally. Specific disease states that involve abnormalities are examined in detail. All major organ systems are covered (e.g. immune system, cardiovascular system), and in addition, biological areas specific or particularly important to these developmental periods are covered separately (e.g. growth, temperature regulation). Previously entitled 'Perinatal and Pediatric Pathophysiology', the second edition has been extensively revised and updated, to ensure it provides essential information for the trainee paediatrition or neonatologist. The chapters on membrane, cellular and molecular biology and on immunology have been totally rewritten. New chapters have been added on genetics, clinical genetics and on bone, connective tissue and skin development. The chapter on neurophysiology is greatly extended with reference to both basic physiology and developmental aspects.

First multi-year cumulation covers six years: 1965-70.

This text covers the neonatal and pediatric patient in a single work by a group of nationally recognized contributors from a wide variety of specialties, including respiratory care, pulmonology, cardiology, etc. It is comprehensive enough to serve as both a textbook and a reference source. It emphasizes competency in clinical and technical skills and includes coverage of pediatric intensive care. An instructor's manual, clinical handbook, workbook, and slide set are available.

Perinatal medicine, which is concerned with the problems of the fetus and newborn, has rapidly developed in the last two decades as an important and challenging specialty. Rapid advances in the field, coupled with tech nological advances, now are making survival of infants with weights as low as 500 grams possible. Ventilator care for severe respiratory problems is on the verge of being replaced by surfactant replacement therapy; on the other hand, development of such technologies as extracorporeal mem brane oxygenation and jet ventilation has revolutionized the care of these sick infants. The advances taking place today in the field of perinatal medicine make periodic updates, like the one provided by this volume, a virtual necessity for clinicians and paramedical personnel alike. A distinguished group of specialists in various aspects of perinatal medicine has contributed to this book. Their wide-ranging experience and points of view should make this book a valuable reference for all physicians and allied health personnel involved in the care of the high-risk fetus and newborn.
