This book contains a "series of original addresses, with appropriate answers for Saint Valentine's Day, adapted for the use of both sexes." These original addresses clearly show that love in 1840 could be as confusing, as all-consuming or as downright vexing as love today. The introductory poem says, "Though 'tis the source of human joy, / Love oft-times will our peace destroy: / Become a madd'ning, pleasing pain, / That puzzles mortals to explain." What follows is a rather impressive group of 'addresses, ' including verse addressed "To a Handsome Lady," "To a Jealous Gentleman," "To an Old Maid Who Dresses in the Extreme of Fashion," "To a Bandy-Legged Gentleman," "To a Lady Fond of Mythology" and "To a Dandy." (Lines from "To a Dandy" include this description of the poor man: "Such monst'rous loads of hair are on your chin, / And you have learnt so horribly to grin, / That folk mistake you for a well-drest ape, / Somewhat approaching to the human shape.") These verses will definitely amuse!
