First published 1983. Aimed at improving agricultural production by providing a better under· standing of the interaction between crops and the environment, this book presents the latest research findings on the effects of water and temperature stresses on plants in humid temperate regions. It also covers management practices and breeding programs that may reduce crop sensitivity to the vagaries of weather.

The ninth volume of Water-in-Plants Bibi iography includes papers in al I fields of plant water relations research which appeared during the year 1983. - from theoreti cal considerations about the state of water in cel 15 and its membrane transport to drought resistance of plants or physiological significance of irrigation. In addition to papers devoted entirely to plant water relations, papers on other topics are in cluded if they contain data on plant hydration level, water vapour efflux, rate of water uptake or water transport, etc., or if they contain valuable methodological in formation (measurement of selected microclimatic factors, soi I moisture etc. l. We have tried to cover ful Iy the relevant papers which have been publ ished in important scientific periodicals and books. Articles appeared in local journals, mimeographed booklets, abstracts of thesis and of symposia contributions, etc., were chosen mostly from reprints received directly from authors. The courtesy of those is highly appreciated. The manuscript is usual Iy prepared in May and June of the year fol lowing the year which it covers. Unfortunately some reprints come later and thus the respective references appear in the fol lowing volume, with one year delay. To maximize the value of the bibi iography the references are arranged alphabetic al Iy according to the authors' names, and each volume is provided with three indexes.

Following in the tradition of its predecessor, Crop Responses to Environment, this fully updated and more comprehensive second edition describes aspects of crop responses to environment that are particularly relevant to the development of improved crop cultivars and management methods on a global scale. It includes an extensive discussion of the difficulties in developing agricultural systems that accommodate increasing human needs for agricultural products during the twenty-first century in a sustainable manner. The book features new sections on adaptation to global climate change including adapting to global warming, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, and increased flooding and salinity through plant breeding and changes in crop management. Warming effects include stressful effects of heat on pollen development and reduced winter chilling effects on fruit and nut trees. The book examines principles, theories, mathematical models, and experimental observations concerning plant responses to environment that are relevant to the development of improved crop cultivars and management methods. It illustrates the importance of considering emergent plant properties as well as reductionist approaches to understanding plant function and adaptation. Plant physiological and developmental responses to light and temperature, and plant water relations are considered in detail. Dr. Hall also describes climatic zone definitions based on temperature, rainfall, and evaporative demand in relation to plant adaptation and the prediction of crop water use. Irrigation management and crop responses to salinity, flooding and toxic levels of boron and aluminum are considered. Crop responses to pests and diseases as they interact with crop responses to physical and chemical aspects of the environment are examined. The book concludes with analyses illustrating the relevance of crop responses to environment to plant breeding.

The greatest challenge of our time is to produce sufficient food ot keep pace with the rapidly growing population. In the opinion of experts, during the next 25 years there will be a need for as much food as was produced in the entire history of mankind to date. Of the various measures available, improvement in agricultural productivity is judged as the ultimate means of augmenting food production and supplies. In this Handbook, an international team of experts consider the most important factors affecting production of both crops and livestock. This Handbook is intended as a scientific guide to practitioners and students, as well as to researchers, who should find here stimulating ideas for further exploration.
