This new East Africa report is fruit of a partnership between TradeMark East Africa and ECA's sub-regional office for Eastern Africa - two organisations that share a pan-African vocation and the conviction that greater intra-regional trade and investment is the way forward. As one of the largest trade facilitation organisations in the world, TMEA brings a wealth of experience in financing measures to reduce trade barriers and facilitate cross-border business. TMEA is planning to heavily support implementation of the AfCTA by working with countries to reduce numerous existing bottlenecks to African trade that, without remedy, will reduce the potential benefits of the AfCFTA. We will do this in partnership with Governments, the Africa Union, ECA and hundreds of partners on the ground. This practical focus on implementation, combined with ECA's convening power and thought-leadership on the AfCFTA, makes for an effective collaboration.

The East African Community has long recognized that regional economic integration can yield significant welfare gains to its member states. To that end, the community has been making steady progress towards the removal of tariffs and quantitative restrictions to trade. Moreover, in recent years, there has been an increasing recognition that: (a) even greater welfare gains could be realized through deeper forms of regional integration which entail harmonization of legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks; and (b) reforms that reduce cross-border transaction costs and improve the performance of "backbone" infrastructure services are arguably even more important for the creation of an open, unified regional economic space than trade policy reforms narrowly defined. Disparities of regulatory treatment across borders can introduce distortions that hinder both cross-border trade and the aggregate flows of investment on a regional basis. Regulatory harmonization and infrastructure regionalization could make a significant contribution to the region's economic development by promoting a more efficient utilization of its human and physical resources, enhancing connectivity, reducing the costs of trade, and facilitating the integration of the continent with the global economy.

The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets 2022 (SOCO 2022) discusses how trade policies, based on both multilateral and regional approaches, can address today’s challenges for sustainable development. Trade policies in food and agriculture should aim to safeguard global food security, address the trade-offs between economic and environmental objectives, and strengthen the resilience of the global agrifood system to shocks, such as conflicts, pandemics and extreme weather. The report discusses the geography of trade, analysing food and agricultural trade and its patterns across countries and regions, its drivers and the trade policy environment. Comparative advantage, trade policies and trade costs shape the patterns of trade in food and agriculture. When comparative advantage plays out in the global market, trade benefits all countries. Lowering tariff barriers and reducing trade costs can promote trade and economic growth. Both multilateral and regional trade agreements can facilitate the process of making trade an avenue for growth but the gains of trade are distributed unevenly. When global environmental impacts, such as climate change, are considered, a multilateral approach to trade can help expand the reach of mitigation measures.

This book focuses on the market issues facing Asian industrialization and the possibility, feasibility, and sustainability of China integrating the Asian economics. How China's rise affects Asian market and the economic relation between China and other Asian economies? The book looks into this issue from market and regional perspectives and concludes that: Asian industrialization including China makes the unified regional market as the common goal of Asian economies; the integration of Asian markets is also a key strategy for China in the next 5-10 years; China may become a major player or even a leader in integrating regional markets; however, it will be a longtime process depending on China's economic strength in the future.
