A book for pregnant women who would prefer to give birth with as little intervention as possible, so as to make things as good as possible for both themselves and their babies. The 'countdown' takes the reader through 10 key topics, and all discussion of issues is supplemented with birth stories and comments from all kinds of women and professionals too. The tone is practical, reassuring and even inspirational because the many positive birth stories show how it's possible to have a really happy, healthy experience of birth. Contributions come from Janet Balaskas (the woman who realised we're better off not lying down when we give birth!), Michel Odent (pioneer of water births) and Bill Bryson (the travel writer)... as well as from many other experts and 'ordinary' but extraordinary mothers, who made this book possible. The advice is based on current research evidence and in any cases where the evidence is controversial the research and relevant issues are discussed in an optional extra 'notes' section at the back of the book. There is a comprehensive Glossary of pregnancy terms and a user-friendly Index, so as to make it an optimally useful book in all sense of the word. In short, this is a handbook which could make a real difference to a pregnant woman's experience and also to that of her baby. A comment from an antenatal teacher: "What every woman will want to know, put simply and clearly." A comment from a midwife, perinatal researcher and adjunct professor (Betty-Anne Daviss): "Sylvie has created a prescription for healthy birth in a 10-step approach to keep parents focused on what is important in a potentially disastrous birth environment... She has... provided us with a book that encapsulates anything you wanted to know about keeping your birth normal and healthy..." And a comment from a mother: "Had a very late night Friday as I could not put your book down. Wow!"

In All My Born Days -- Stories by a Sharecropper's Son, a historical autobiography, Kenneth R. Shipe looks back on his early life in the poverty-stricken hills of West Virginia, and recalls how his parents struggled during the Depression to scratch a living from the soil for a family of ten. He tells how a New Deal farm loan made it possible for his father to work as a sharecropper in Maryland and describes the primitive processes the Shipe family used for growing and harvesting crops, butchering animals and preserving meat. The Shipes were ruled by the forces of nature: bitter cold winters; a flood that washed over their West Virginia home; and a forest fire that surrounded their house in Maryland and had Ken and his family flat on their bellies, gasping for breath. Ken remembers humorous incidents from his days in a country schoolhouse, and how he almost lost his life when his new bicycle ran off a mountain road. And he writes about World War II, which snatched up his brothers and critical farm helpers, leading to failure of the Shipes' sharecropping venture and subsequently his own call to duty as a Marine in the Korean War.

This book is based on a kid, along with all his deeds from his birth till his age of 7 Years. That child wanted joy and fun in his life all the time, and whenever he felt that these frantic things were missing or going away from him, he started doing impish activities in order to bring harmony in his mind and soul. Some of his actions stood tranquil, and some imbalanced the peacefulness present in the life of other people. I would be interesting to read all the happenings that occurred in his life as a child. And most importantly, this book is for the people of all age groups and it is eminently favoured for all those people who have now started feeling bored after going through the romance-fiction books. Hope you enjoy reading this book, as it will unquestionably shove you into the memories of your childhood.

"During the ten years in which Austin was their home, Amelia Barr took an active part in the social life of the frontier capital and wrote in her diary vivid pictures of many Texans and local events and scenes. In 1914 much of this material appeared in her autobiography, All the Days of My Life! Her accounts included women, Sam Houston, Indians who visited the capital, and local affairs concerning the Civil War. Though she did not show it outwardly, Amelia Barr was a mystic and deeply religious. Her life was governed by intuitions and prophetic dreams, many of which she related in striking detail. In 1866 the family moved to Galveston, where Barr had found new employment. In the yellow fever scourge of the next year, Barr and three sons died, leaving Mrs. Barr and three daughters. For a while she operated a boardinghouse on Tremont Street, but when this venture failed she went to New York"--Tshaonline.org.
