According to some, French philosophy has taken an obvious turn towards/into a theological context. In their work, contemporary philosophers such as Ricoeur, Levinas, Girard, Henry, and even Derrida and Lyotard in their later periods focus on issues usually associated with theological debates. For thinkers like Henry, Marion, and Lacoste, theology even plays a prominent role in their thought. Why this post-Heideggerian turn to God? This book introduces the typically French debate of the so-called 'theological turn of French philosophy' through a presentation of the philosophers mentioned. Why are they all interested in the quest for God and Religion? How do they understand God in a philosophical way? Thinking about these questions offers to both philosophy and theology the opportunity for a crossover which is mutually enriching. This book aims to contribute to this fascinating process.

Since the 1980s, France has experienced a vigorous revival of interest in its past and cultural heritage. This has been expressed as part of a movement of remembering through museums and festivals as well as via elaborate commemorations, most notably those held to celebrate the bi-centenary of the Revolution in 1989 and can be interpreted as part of a re-examinaton of what it means to be French in the context of ongoing Europeanization. This study brings together scholars from multidisciplinary backgrounds and engages them in debate with professionals from France, who are working in the fields of museology, heritage and cultural production. Addressing subjects such as war and memory, gastronomy and regional identity, maritime culture and urban societies, they throw fresh light on the process by which France has been conceptualized and packaged as a cultural object.

Excerpt from Contemporary Thought in France: As Seen in Her Literature From 1900 to 1914 The year 1900 has not been chosen arbitrarily, but because it marks an epoch in the literature and thought of France that ends of its own accord with the outbreak of war in August 1914. At this date, and even earlier, two currents can easily be discerned, and they are both in a measure due to the Great Affair, a movement of national renaissance and a reawakening of Catholic faith, unhampered by Clericalism. The love of truth and of country and of action which swept over France after the Dreyfus affair was accompanied by deep feelings of mysticism and faith which are best explained in Peguy's own words: - "Notre dreyfusisme etait une religion - je prends le mot dans son sens le plus litteralement exact - une poussee religieuse, une crise religieuse, et je conseillerais meme vivement a qui voudrait tudier, considerer, connaitre un mouvement religieux dans les temps modernes, bien caracteVis, bien dimite, bien taille, de saisir cet exemple unique. J'ajoute que pour nous, chez nous, en nous, ce mouvement religieux tait d'essence chretienne, d'origine chretienne, qu'il poussait de souche chretienne, qu'il coulait de Tantique source."
