Excerpt from Consolation in Trials and Suffering The author of the original work has not given his name to the world, but it bears evidence of being the production of some earnest, sincere, and experienced fellow-disciple, who has left this little legacy for those who were to come after him, and who are, perhaps, like their Master, to be taught and perfected through suffer ing. It Will be pleasant to those of liberal views in religion, to find how little doctrlne has to do with the attainment of Faith, hope, and Charity, or Love. The author of the present volume has felt it to be a duty to arrange and republish this little work, as there may be others to whom it may come as a messenger of h0pe and comfort in affliction, mental or corporeal. Excerpt from In Tribulation, or the Blessing of Trials Only He who made our hearts fully understands them; and no one but the Son of man who is the Son of God can be touched with the feeling of all our infirmi ties, having been in all points tried as we have been tried. But whoever has had any experience of trials, suffering, sorrow, bereavement, and has been divinely helped to profit by that experience, can hope to be of service in words of sympathy to those similarly tried and troubled. It is the heart which bleeds with its own sorrows which can go out in living sympathy toward another bleeding heart; and it is the hearts that have gained comfort from the God of all comfort that can speak comforting words to others who are in any affliction, out of the comfort wherewith they them. Excerpt from The Problem of Consolation This book has grown out of a pastor's effort to be the bearer of consolation to thinking people in times of distress. To the sufferer it may be a problem of pain, but to the pastor whose aim is to lift him out of suffering it becomes a problem of consolation. There exists so much confusion as to the interpretation of God's relation to life's problems that the principles of God's moral gov ernment are often misunderstood or overlooked. Words change their meaning, new facts modify or change the philosophy that molds sentences. Old interpretations that satisfied minds whose thinking was harmonized with former facts by an old philosophy do so no more. Compared with the time when the Scriptures were written, we have a new world and new facts, and with these a new philosophy that demands a new inter pretation of our experiences to harmonize Light, Life, and Truth. As Paul, in his Epistle to the Romans, expressed the gospel in Roman terms and Roman modes of thought, so it becomes our duty to do the same for our modern world. In this humble effort I desire to express my indebt edness to Bergson and Eucken for the principles that I have endeavored to work upon. Excerpt from The Sanctuary of Suffering The subject of the following pages is one which at once enlists in its behalf some Of our deepest human interests. For Suffering is universal, and assumes such manifold forms, that whatever sheds light upon it, or tends to unfold its nature and issues, will always touch, at one point or another, the human heart. The writer, it should be understood, does not profess to dogmatise upon Its mysteries, - the mystery Of pain, and sorrow, and the seeming inequalities Of the present stage of human life, - but accepting their mysterious ness, to dwell, in the spirit of quiet and practical medi tation, upon the various forms Of Suffering, and their purpose in the final manifestation Of the Divine Love. Such subjects as Pain, in its connection with the Fall, and in its aspects as independent of the Fall, and the Incarnation, viewed as a part of god's original Purpose, modified indeed in its Character, but not necessitated by human Sin, - and other kindred points are touched with a sympathetic hand, so as to open up sources of spiritual consolation and devout thought, rather than to limit, by mere definition, what lies beyond our spiritual vision. And in this, I venture to think, consists the great value Of this thoughtful and interesting work. For, in moments Of great Suffering, men are lifted above the ordinary levels Of life and thought, and introduced to that higher Spiritual Region, in which the eye gazes upon the Mystery Of the Divine Purpose in its ultimate tendencies rather than on the immediate human aspect, which such Suffering presents. And in that vision, and at the close Of the long vista, is seen the Figure Of the Man of Sorrows, embodying in Himself at once the acutest forms Of human Suffering and the most perfect Manifestation of the Divine Love. But, as the writer implies throughout, certain condi tions are necessary for the due understanding Of the Mystery Of Suffering, and the fulfilment Of its Purpose. Some of these it will be useful just to touch upon briefly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
