Now, in the appealing and collectible Pocket Classics format, an anthology of beloved, classic detective stories—riveting and irresistibly addictive tales of crimes and those who unravel them. Beginning with modern masters such as Sara Paretsky, Ruth Rendell, and Ian Rankin, this collection works its way back through the golden age of the 1920s and ’30s to the genre’s source in Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. The famous detectives who stalk these pages range from the brilliant and eccentric (Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin) to the deceptively unlikely (G. K. Chesterton’s humble priest, Father Brown; and Agatha Christie’s tweedy spinster, Miss Marple); from the tough-guy private eyes created by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler to accidental bystanders, such as the perceptive neighbors in Susan Glaspell’s haunting “A Jury of Her Peers.” From classic whodunits featuring Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason and Georges Simenon’s Inspector Maigret to Jorge Luis Borges’s postmodern tribute to Poe in “Death and the Compass,” the stories in this volume will tantalize, perplex, and amaze.

Watching her friend dragged away in handcuffs, Josie couldn't believe for one second that Gretchen had killed that poor boy. Confession or not, someone else was involved. She would find out who… When the body of a young student is found on the driveway of a local Denton home, a photograph pinned to his collar, Detective Josie Quinn is first on the scene. The house belongs to Gretchen Palmer, a dedicated member of Josie’s team, missing for the last twenty-four hours. Working around the clock, Josie is stopped in her tracks when Gretchen hands herself in to the police. She knows that there’s no way Gretchen could ever be a killer, so why would she confess to a murder she didn’t commit? Digging deep into Gretchen’s secretive life, Josie uncovers a link between the boy, the photograph and a devastating case in Gretchen’s past. But just when Josie thinks she has it all figured out, the bodies of a young couple surface on the other side of town. Can Josie get to the truth in time to save her friend from a life in prison or certain death? In a spellbinding new masterpiece by author H. A. Bryant, Matt Kelly undertakes a high-stakes investigation. The legendary PI and kickboxer Matt Kelly has at long last severed ties with his friends in Tokyo and settled quietly in Nagoya, the only place where he thinks he can ever truly know peace. His beautiful girlfriend, Mitsuko, has taken over the day-to-day management of a dress shop in the neighborhood of Marunouchi, Naka-ku, Nagoya. But when a mother, a Mrs. Nishimoto, asks Matt to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and possible abduction of her daughter, he is drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse where nothing is as it seems. For his part, Matt spends his days first in Hakusanbora, Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, and later in Sakae’s streets and alleys looking for the missing woman. And later back to Tokyo to get help from some new friends. As Matt delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers layers of corruption and deceit that reach far beyond the missing woman and the Chubu-kai yakuza. He finds himself in a dangerous game of wits against some of the most powerful and dangerous people in the country, and realizes that he will have to use all of his skills and intelligence to stay one step ahead of his enemies and uncover the truth. With the help of his friends in Tokyo, including a former lawyer and a brilliant investigator, Matt races against time to find the missing woman and bring those responsible for her disappearance to justice. Along the way, he must navigate the complexities of Japanese society, from the glamorous nightclubs of Sakae to the seedy back alleys of Nagoya, in order to piece together the puzzle and stay alive. The deeper Matt delves into the investigation, the more he realizes that nothing is what it seems, and that the truth is far more sinister than he ever imagined. Will he be able to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice, or will he become just another pawn in a deadly game of power and deceit?

Excerpt from After the Confession: And Other Verses Several years ago I had gathered a large number of verses which were about to be published when I was suddenly deprived of that pleasure by a person who borrowed the manuscript and never returned it. Upon inquiry I was told that the manuscript had been stolen. Having no other copy, and not willing to set a detective on the track of the thief, although, I confess, I should have liked to make his acquaintance, the public was per chance spared an affliction. Incidentally, I may say that a paternal government might subsidise a thief of that sort for the purpose of having the works of putative poets opportunely stolen. However, I sincerely regret the loss of mv manuscript, because it contained many poems to my mother, and these I have been unable to re-write from memory; but I shall know them, and so will a great many who read some of them as they appeared in the Press. Excerpt from The Molly Maguires and the Detectives The governing idea in the mind of the author, while preparing this volume for the press, has been to give details connected with the Mollie Maguires, and follow strictly the truth concerning the adventures of the detectives during three years passed in their midst. He is aware that, in many places, the relation reads much like fiction, and that it will be accepted as romance by very many who are totally unacquainted with the country and the people attempted to be described. It has been the constant endeavor to adhere closely to facts, and if the incidents are, in a great degree, novel and absorbing, it is due to these facts, and they were worked out, through arduous labors, in sleepless nights and undivided attention to the ends to be gained. The coal regions of Pennsylvania are inhabited by a mixture of races, the ingredients perhaps more widely differing, in character and origin, than those of any other portion of the globe.
