This book lays a comprehensive foundation for addressing the issue of safety in the lifecycle of nuclear waste. With the focus on the fundamental principles, the book covers key technical approaches to safety in the management of spent nuclear fuel, reprocessed high-level waste, low-level waste, and decommissioning wastes. Behaviors of nuclear waste in natural and engineered systems in relation to safety assessment are also described through the explanation of fundamental processes. For any country involved with the use of nuclear power, nuclear waste management is a topic of grave importance. Although many countries have heavily invested in nuclear waste management, having a successful national program still remains a major challenge. This book offers substantial guidance for those seeking solutions to these problems. As the problem of nuclear waste management is heavily influenced by social factors, the connection between technical and social issues in nuclear waste management is also discussed. The book is a core text for advanced students in nuclear and environmental engineering, and a valuable reference for those working in nuclear engineering and related areas.

The goal of this book is to examine the complex state of radioactivity in the environment, and to understand the interplay of its two principal sources: man-made and natural. The text examines human contributions to release of radionuclides, with an eye to future reductions, and assesses natural occurrences in an evaluation of baseline radioactivity.

The ISAM project involved the review and enhancement of post-closure safety assessment methodologies and tools for both existing and proposed near surface radioactive waste disposal facilities. The main objectives of the project were to: (a) provide a critical evaluation of the approaches and tools used in the post-closure safety assessment of proposed and existing near surface radioactive waste disposal facilities; (b) enhance the approaches and tools used; (c) build confidence in the approaches and tools used. In order to help achieve these objectives, the ISAM project paid particular attention to discussing, agreeing and setting down a safety assessment methodology. The ISAM project primarily focused on developing a consensus on the methodological aspects of safety assessment, but also gave considerable attention to illustrating the application of the methodology to three main types of disposal facilities (vault, RADON and borehole type disposal facilities).--Publisher description.
