This book is the first to survey current developments in computational phonology, and it does so in a way that is accessible to computational linguists, phonologists and computer scientists alike.

This dissertation provides a coherent, synchronic, broad-coverage, generative phonology of Russian. I test the grammar empirically in a number of ways to determine its goodness of fit to Russian. In taking this approach, I aim to avoid making untested (or even incoherent) generalizations based on only a handful of examples. In most cases, the tests show that there are exceptions to the theory, but at least we know what the exceptions are, a baseline is set against which future theories can be measured, and in most cases the percentage of exceptional cases is reduced to below 5%. The principal theoretical outcomes of the work are as follows. First, I show that all of the phonological or morphophonological processes reviewed can be described by a grammar no more powerful than context-free. Secondly, I exploit probabilistic constraints in the syllable structure grammar to explain why constraints on word-marginal onsets and codas are weaker than on word-internal onsets and codas. I argue that the features []/- initial] and []/- final], and extraprosodicity, are unnecessary for this purpose.

This book provides the first broad yet thorough coverage of issues in morphological theory. It includes a wide array of techniques and systems in computational morphology (including discussion of their limitations), and describes some unusual applications.Sproat motivates the study of computational morphology by arguing that a computational natural language system, such as a parser or a generator, must incorporate a model of morphology. He discusses a range of applications for programs with knowledge of morphology, some of which are not generally found in the literature. Sproat then provides an overview of some of the basic descriptive facts about morphology and issues in theoretical morphology and (lexical) phonology, as well as psycholinguistic evidence for human processing of morphological structure. He take up the basic techniques that have been proposed for doing morphological processing and discusses at length various systems (such as DECOMP and KIMMO) that incorporate part or all of those techniques, pointing out the inadequacies of such systems from both a descriptive and a computational point of view. There is a growing need for the intelligent processing of unstructured text data, which includes the extraction of various forms of information from it, since the amount of unstructured text data that mankind creates generally & on the Internet continues to evolve. In order to address a variety of higher-level language issues, the goal of my study is to create learning models that are capable of independently producing representations of human language, namely its structure and meaning. my is for the purpose of my thesis. When it comes to the delivery of technologies in the field of natural language processing (NLP), a significant amount of progress has been made. These technologies include the extraction of information from large amounts of unstructured data on the internet, the analysis of sentiment in social networks, and the grammatical analysis of essays for the purpose of grading. The creation of universal & scalable algorithms that are capable of jointly solving these problems & learning the appropriate intermediate representations of the linguistic units involved is that which is one of the aims of natural language processing. Standard ways to achieving this objective, on the other hand, suffer from two basic deficiencies.
