L'optimisation du dimensionnement des chaussées souples passe nécessairement par l'amélioration de la modélisation et de la prise en compte du comportement mécanique des graves non traitées (GNT) utilisées en couche d'assise. La caractérisation de l'état initial des GNT en place est une étape indispensable pour prédire correctement les déformations permanentes du matériau (contribution à l'orniérage de la chaussée). L'utilisation d'essais triaxiaux cycliques structurés en plans d'expériences permet d'étudier l'influence du matériau et de sa mise en oeuvre sur ses paramètres d'état initial (module élastique initial et densité sèche initial). De la même façon, l'influence du matériau, de son état initial, et du chargement sur l'accumulation des déformations permanentes des GNT calcaires est mise en évidence et quantifiée à partir d'essais TCR par paliers. Les modèles établis en laboratoire sont validés par les mesures réalisées sur un site expérimental via des simulations numériques de l'essai à la plaque et du chargement routier standard.

This book addresses the latest issues in multiscale geomechanics. Written by leading experts in the field as a tribute to Jean Biarez (1927-2006), it can be of great use and interest to researchers and engineers alike. A brief introduction describes how a major school of soil mechanics came into being through the exemplary teaching by one man. Biarez's life-long work consisted of explaining the elementary mechanisms governing soil constituents in order to enhance understanding of the underlying scientific laws which control the behavior of constructible sites and to incorporate these scientific advancements into engineering practices. He innovated a multiscale approach of passing from the discontinuous medium formed by individual grains to an equivalent continuous medium. The first part of the book examines the behavior of soils at the level of their different constituents and at the level of their interaction. Behavior is then treated at the scale of the soil sample. The second part deals with soil mechanics from the vantage point of the construction project. L'orniérage, dû à l'accumulation des déformations permanentes des matériaux non liés, sous les passages répétés des charges roulantes, est le principal mode de dégradation des chaussées à assises non traitées. Ces chaussées dites souples présentent un comportement fortement non linéaire, mal pris en compte dans la méthode française de dimensionnement. Afin d'améliorer la prédiction du comportement à long terme de ces chaussées, nous proposons une méthode de calcul de l'orniérage, permettant de prendre en compte le comportement non linéaire des matériaux non traités et des conditions de chargement réalistes.
