The first group of papers in this publication focuses on the global efforts to respond to the needs for basic education and the Education for All (EFA) movement. It includes papers about the role of UNESCO and the G8. The second section looks at the health challenges to education, in particular the impact of HIV/AIDS. Against a background of waxing and waning enthusiasm for higher education, the third section looks at the current challenges facing tertiary education and its potential for solving a wide range of problems. Part four covers the contribution that environmental education can make to sustainable development. The fifth section looks at educational co-operation in the Commonwealth, with profiles of educational associations and non-governmental organisations, followed by a directory of research bodies each of the Commonwealth countries.

International teacher migration poses a wide range of challenges to the recognition and transferability of teacher qualifications across borders. This study aims to enhance recognition of teacher qualifications across borders and between the member countries of the Commonwealth.

Youth Mainstreaming in Development Planning: Transforming Young Lives is a compendium of concepts to initiate dialogue and mobilise consensus around visions and strategies for young people and includes practical tools and techniques that will support initiatives to mainstream youth rights, voices and capabilities across government and other institutions. This book explores the current status of primary schools in Rwanda and the history behind their development. It argues that current primary school leaders in the area encounter a wide range of problems relating to conflict prevention, teachers' and school leaders' professionalism, financial and resourcing constraints, student attrition, and parental disengagement, many of which can be attributed to the legacies of war and the genocide in 1994. The book also presents a range of strategies that are pursued by school leaders while dealing with these concerns, as the Rwandan government invests in reconstructing education following the country's turmoil. Through examining the issues of the past and the present, the book provides valuable insights for researchers of educational leadership, school leaders, education policy makers, and those in charge of preparing, developing, and implementing professional development programmes for school leaders and teachers in Rwanda, as well as in other post-war and developing countries.
