Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has been used in routine diagnostic applications and in research since the 1980s. In the following decades, as the clinical application of hybrid imaging has grown, SPECT-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) has demonstrated improved patient management and become fully integrated in the routine diagnostic approach to a variety of clinical indications, including both oncologic and non-oncologic diseases. This IAEA Human Health Series publication presents a review of the published data from recent applications of SPECT-CT across nine different clinical scenarios including neurology, orthopaedics, endocrinology and cardiology, to demonstrate the variety of hybrid imaging in nuclear medicine and support decision making when allocating resources in the health care system. It provides a relevant source of information for nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists and clinical practitioners.

Integrated single photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography (SPECT/CT) has emerged as an important diagnostic tool in medical imaging, where morphological markers are superimposed on anatomical images to allow a more thorough examination and higher levels of diagnostic accuracy. This TECDOC presents an overview of the SPECT/CT technology for use by nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists and clinical practitioners. The publication also covers the current medical status of SPECT/CT imaging, the role of this technology in the clinical management of patients and possible trends for future development.

Quality assurance (QA) is a crucial part of all aspects of nuclear medicine practice. The objective of this publication is to provide professionals in nuclear medicine centers with detailed quality control test procedures for the scintillation camera and computer system. Three types of quality tests are described in detail: acceptance, reference and routine tests for the scintillation camera, both in single and multiple head configurations, for obtaining images and quantitative data in planar imaging mode; whole body imaging mode; and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The publication is primarily intended to be of use to medical physicists, technologists, and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for ensuring optimal performance of imaging instruments, particularly SPECT systems. It may also be useful to managers, clinicians, and other decision-makers who are responsible for implementing quality assurance and quality control programs in nuclear medicine c

This book, now in a revised and updated second edition, covers the full spectrum of clinical applications of SPECT/CT in the diagnosis and therapy planning of benign and malignant diseases. All chapters have been thoroughly updated and some chapters have been completely rewritten by a new group of experts. The opening chapters discuss the technology and physics of SPECT/CT and its use in dosimetry. The role of SPECT/CT in the imaging of a range of pathologic conditions is then addressed in detail. Applications covered include imaging of the thyroid, neuroendocrine tumors, bone, cardiac scintigraphy, sentinel node scintigraphy and imaging of the lungs. Individual chapters are also devoted to therapy planning in selective internal radiation therapy of liver tumors and to Bremsstrahlung SPECT/CT. For Nuclear Medicine Physicians, Radiologists and medical students in this field, the book offers an essential and up-to-date source of information on this invaluable hybrid imaging technique.

This publication reviews the current state of the art of image quantification and provides a solid background of tools and methods to medical physicists and other related professionals who are faced with quantification of radionuclide distribution in clinical practice. It describes and analyses the physical effects that degrade image quality and affect the accuracy of quantification, and describes methods to compensate for them in planar, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) images.
