This study is an evolution of the Minnesota Local Road Research Board’s sponsored research Modernizing Road Construction Plans and Documentation (Iowa State University, September 2016). Where previous studies provided high-level practices for transportation, this research examines advances in preliminary (0-30%) design tools and methods that bring ramifications to the larger BIM for Infrastructure project life cycle. This has been an overlooked but vital area that sets the tone for success in civil transportation projects adopting 3D information technologies. An existing traditionally delivered project in Carver County, Minnesota, is mirrored as context to explore the emerging tools and methods. Findings identify changes in functionality and process that modify work breakdown relationships, reduce silos of information, and expedite project delivery. Identified advancements will challenge engineers and draftsman to rethink their roles in the design process as organizations now have the opportunity to re-evaluate workflows and streamline project delivery methods.

The term civil integrated management (CIM) has been adopted in recent years to encompass an assortment of practices and tools entailing collection, organization, and management of information in digital formats about highway or other transportation construction projects, Transportation agencies may realize significant benefits from increased adoption of these practices, which may be useful when managing an asset's initial planning phase through its in-service maintenance.

This volume contains the papers presented at IALCCE2018, the Sixth International Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE2018), held in Ghent, Belgium, October 28-31, 2018. It consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB device with full papers including the Fazlur R. Khan lecture, 8 keynote lectures, and 390 technical papers from all over the world. Contributions relate to design, inspection, assessment, maintenance or optimization in the framework of life-cycle analysis of civil engineering structures and infrastructure systems. Applications relate to buildings, bridges and viaducts, highways and runways, tunnels and underground structures, off-shore and marine structures, dams and hydraulic structures, prefabricated design, infrastructure systems, etc. During the IALCCE2018 conference a particular focus is put on the cross-fertilization between different sub-areas of expertise and the development of an overall vision for life-cycle analysis in civil engineering. The aim of the editors is to provide a valuable source of cutting edge information for anyone interested in life-cycle analysis and assessment in civil engineering, including researchers, practising engineers, consultants, contractors, decision makers and representatives from local authorities.
