Nous étions hier dans un catholicisme de convention, largement partagé, et nous voilà aujourd'hui dans un catholicisme d'élection, réduit à une minorité. Entre ces deux moments, des années 1880 aux années 1980, s'est déployé un catholicisme d'action, porté par un puissant mouvement catholique dont on n'a plus idée. A travers des approches croisées, ce livre essaie de rendre compte de la corrélation paradoxale entre une dynamique apostolique impressionnante et une crise religieuse spectaculaire, en prêtant particulièrement attention à la question cruciale du progressisme chrétien, posée par l'engagement de certains catholiques de gauche aux côtés des communistes. Catholicism, once the protean monster, still functions as a complex component of French identity. No consideration of modern France would be complete without reference to the enduring impact and influence of Catholicism on the life of the nation. This volume sets out to capture some of the variety and significance of the Catholic phenomenon in twentieth-century secular France, and to express something of its extraordinary vitality and interest. Each contribution focuses on a specific theme or period crucial to an understanding of the role played by French Catholics and their Church. Collectively, these studies reveal that Catholics were involved in almost every event of consequence and voiced an opinion on almost every issue. Equally, the volume offers a collage of insights which reflects the fragmentation of Catholic activity and attitudes as the century progressed. Being Catholic in modern France no longer means the espousal of a particular political or social agenda. Nor does it necessarily mean regular and traditional religious observance, or even strict adherence to the dictates of the Church. Modern French Catholicism truly has many mansions.

Dans cette France du XXème siècle, que les années 1880 ont voulu rendre à la seule puissance de l’humain, l’institution romaine a clairement pris place dans l’arène politique : refusant de se laisser enfermer dans la simple administration du culte, elle s’est assignée de replacer la figure divine au fondement même de l’espace public. De ce projet antimoderne, est né un “catholicisme de mouvement”, fait de théologies conquérantes et de mobilisations offensives : ce livre analyse, depuis sa constitution sous Léon XIII jusqu’à sa reviviscence sous Jean-Paul II, les grandes étapes de son histoire.

Even though the policy impact of Catholicism has increasingly been acknowledged, existing scholarship lacks a coherent view on its changing influence over time and in different political contexts. In this book, Fabio Bolzonar investigates the influence of Catholicism on developments in French social protection from World War II to the mid-2010s. He discusses the factors that have favoured or inhibited it and explores the hybridization between Catholic values and secular principles in the social engagement of Catholic actors in secular France. By doing so, this multidisciplinary study integrates current scholarship, which has given limited attention to the changing patterns of Catholic involvement in the social policy domain over a long period of time, and the renewed influence of Catholic values in secularized societies. Catholic mobilization has relocated from the political to the civil society sphere, making voluntary organizations and social movements, rather than political parties, the main channels for defending Catholic values in secular France. Rather than marginalizing Catholicism, this process has opened up new opportunities for Catholic actors and values to play a significant role in society and politics. Bolzonar identifies two divergent scenarios that define Catholic social engagement in contemporary France: either the strengthening of new forms of institutional collaboration between Catholic-inspired philanthropic organizations and public administrations in the interest of socially vulnerable citizens, or the emergence of new ideological conflicts on gender- and sexuality-related issues.

Catholic Labor Movements in Europe narrates the history of industrial labor movements of Catholic inspiration in the period from the onset of World War I to the reconstruction after World War II. The stated goal of concerned Catholics in the 1920s and 1930s was to "rechristianize society." But dominant labor movements in many countries during this period consisted of socialist elements that viewed religion as an obstacle to social progress. It was a daunting challenge to build robust organizations of Catholics who identified themselves with the working classes and their struggles.

Depuis près d'un demi-siècle, l'histoire religieuse a constitué l'un des domaines les plus féconds de la recherche universitaire dédiée à la période contemporaine en France. Le renouvellement de ses questionnements a été régulier et ses acquis sont considérables. Elle doit relever aujourd'hui de nouveaux défis liés tout à la fois aux mutations du religieux dans les sociétés contemporaines et aux déplacements de la recherche au sein de l'institution universitaire. C'est dans cette double perspective que quatorze chercheurs de diverses générations s'interrogent dans cet ouvrage sur les axes de renouvellement nécessaires de l'histoire du catholicisme français contemporain autour de quatre pôles : politique et culture, société et changement social, institutions et pratiques, circulations et connexions. Ils ont en commun le souci de défendre la spécificité de leur objet d'étude et de la démarche qui lui est appliquée mais aussi la préoccupation du dialogue avec les autres champs de l'histoire contemporaine et les sciences humaines ou sociales.
