This is the third in a series of catalogs and bibliographies of the Cicadoidea covering 1981-2010. The work summarizes the cicada literature, providing a means for easy access to information previously published on a particular species or to allow researchers the ability to locate similar work that has been published on other species. A total of 2,591 references are included in the bibliography. The book is a source of biological and systematic information that could be used by zoologists, entomologists, individuals interested in crop protection, and students studying entomology as well as anyone interested in cicadas or who require specific information on the insects. Each genus/species is identified with the reference, the page number, any figures (if applicable), the topics covered by the reference, any synonymies, and any biogeographic information mentioned for the species in the individual reference. An added benefit to the catalog is that it is the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies and new combinations through 2012. - Provides nearly four times the number of references of the previous catalog, demonstrating the explosion of data since that time - Contains all references found that mention a genus or species name in the work - Includes more than 300 additional references that were not in the two previous works on this subject - Features the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies

Volume Two of the new guide to the study of biodiversity in insects Volume Two of Insect Biodiversity: Science and Society presents an entirely new, companion volume of a comprehensive resource for the most current research on the influence insects have on humankind and on our endangered environment. With contributions from leading researchers and scholars on the topic, the text explores relevant topics including biodiversity in different habitats and regions, taxonomic groups, and perspectives. Volume Two offers coverage of insect biodiversity in regional settings, such as the Arctic and Asia, and in particular habitats including crops, caves, and islands. The authors also include information on historical, cultural, technical, and climatic perspectives of insect biodiversity. This book explores the wide variety of insect species and their evolutionary relationships. Case studies offer assessments on how insect biodiversity can help meet the needs of a rapidly expanding human population, and examine the consequences that an increased loss of insect species will have on the world. This important text: Offers the most up-to-date information on the important topic of insect biodiversity Explores vital topics such as the impact on insect biodiversity through habitat loss and degradation and climate change With its companion Volume I, presents current information on the biodiversity of all insect orders Contains reviews of insect biodiversity in culture and art, in the fossil record, and in agricultural systems Includes scientific approaches and methods for the study of insect biodiversity The book offers scientists, academics, professionals, and students a guide for a better understanding of the biology and ecology of insects, highlighting the need to sustainably manage ecosystems in an ever-changing global environment.

The Amazonia is the largest continuous river basin and rainforest ecosystem in the world. In all aspects it is a natural wonder, and the rainforest with its billions of trees is a vital carbon store that slows down the advance of global warming. It is home to one million indigenous people and some three million species of plants and animals. There have been many climate fluctuations during the last 55 million years of its existence, but never before have “the lungs of the world” been at greater risk than they are today due to uncontrolled fires, expanding agriculture and heavy industrial development in the forms of oil drilling, mining and large hydroelectric dams. Over twelve chapters, this book describes the anthropological, biological and industrial problems facing the Amazonia, and seeks to find new solutions.

The authors of the Thomas Say monograph The Cicadas of North America North of Mexico return with a revised and expanded edition of their bestselling work, presented in full color. The new edition includes 172 species and 22 subspecies of cicadas found in continental North America north of Mexico, representing 18 genera from eight tribes in three subfamilies within the family Cicadidae. The higher taxonomy is updated from the first edition, based on more recently proposed taxa. Information on the distribution of each species is now provided.

This first volume in the bi-lingual handbook The Auchenorrhyncha of Central Europe / Die Zikaden Mitteleuropas (to be published in 3 volumes) is an essential and highly valuable addition to the literature available in this field since the last keys published date from 1935 (Haupt) and 1896 (Melichar) respectively. These insects are a very important group: in grassland ecosystems they are one of the most abundant and diverse groups. They are collected in enormous numbers in every entomo-ecological project and are also important from a phytopathological point of view, since many species are virus vectors and/or damage crops as well as various herbs and ornamental trees and shrubs. Simple keys allow an easy identification to the 250 species treated from Central Europe, Northern Europe and the UK. More than 250 drawings as well as 250 distribution maps are included. Almost all species are figured in (700) colour photographs. In addition, information on taxonomy, host plants, habitats, phenology, distribution and economic importance are given. Planthoppers and leafhoppers are among the most abundant and diverse taxa in terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, this first volume of the handbook will be a very important reference tool, not only for entomologists but for everyone working in the fields of ecology, applied zoology and nature conservation.

The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests is a comprehensive review of Australia’s Gondwanan rainforest invertebrate fauna, covering its taxonomy, distribution, biogeography, fossil history, plant community and insect–plant relationships. This is the first work to document the invertebrate diversity of this biologically important region, as well as explain the uniqueness and importance of the organisms. This book examines invertebrates within the context of the plant world that they are dependent on and offers an understanding of Australia’s outstanding (but still largely unknown) subtropical rainforests. All major, and many minor, invertebrate taxa are described and the book includes a section of colour photos of distinctive species. There is also a strong emphasis on plant and habitat associations and fragmentation impacts, as well as a focus on the regionally inclusive Gondwana Rainforests (Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia) World Heritage Area. The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests will be of value to professional biologists and ecologists, as well as amateur entomologists and naturalists in Australia and abroad.
