Case Studies in Islamic Banking and Finance is a pioneering resource that provides practical insights into the real world of Islamic financial transactions, and illustrates the complexities of this rapidly growing mode of modern finance. Based around 12 individual cases, the book stimulates discussion and develops the reader's understanding of Islamic finance by contrasting the theoretical concepts discussed in the author's companion text Introduction to Islamic Banking and Finance with practical real world situations. The cases cover core Islamic banking and finance topics including the Ijara, Mudaraba and Musharaka contracts; Islamic mortgages for home finance; leverage; and issues involved in opening an Islamic bank. Financial statement analysis for Islamic banks, the implications for fund management for equity investing and the impact of loan defaults on Islamic and conventional banks are also included. Each chapter concludes with a set of questions designed to test the reader's understanding of each case, with suggested solutions at the end of the book. This book is a must have resource for those wishing to apply their understanding of this complex subject and is an essential read for anyone seeking practical examples of how to apply the concepts in a real world environment.

This background paper, which is a supplement to the board paper on “Ensuring Financial Stability in Countries with Islamic Banking (IB) Sectors”, presents country experiences with reforms to strengthen regulatory oversight of the IB sector. It reviews experiences with and the progress made in adapting prudential, safety nets and resolution frameworks to the specifics of IB. The selection of several countries from a range of regions with different levels of development and approaches to IB was designed to provide a representative sample of country experiences so as to enrich the policy conclusions. Such a multiplicity of experiences can help to identify common challenges that countries face in reforming their regulatory frameworks and to distill best practices. The countries, for which detailed case studies have been undertaken, are: Bahrain, Djibouti, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

This book draws on a range of theoretical foundations, approaches and management practices that are culturally and jurisdictionally appropriate in several Muslim countries. As such, it contributes to an emerging specialism in comparative management and leadership theory that is oriented toward a broader and more diverse set of perspectives, particularly from the non-Western world, given that the importance of values, ethics, and culture have recently been recognized as a key contributing factor to management knowledge development. The author offers an in-depth overview of the Islamic management strategies that have successfully been implemented in selected Malaysian banking and non-banking financial institutions and then outlines how the application of such strategies leads to increased integrity, efficiency and performance. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the introduction, historical background and methods used in collection of data. The second part consists of a range of real-world case studies, while part three deals with the approaches to be used in the teaching of these cases followed by conclusions and recommendations. These cases studies map the strategic aspects of organizational structure and illustrate the motives that influence Malaysian managers’ choices in seeking specific responses to the situations at hand, which are in harmony with the traditions in Islamic inquiry. As such, management scholars can build a foundation for conceptual and theoretical propositions relevant to Muslim culture and environment that will have practical significance. The book provides a wealth of information and enables researchers not only to identify the determinants of knowledge structure and its context but also the evolution of practice.

Examines the resilience of Islamic banking during the global financial crisis and lessons for risk management. Do Islamic financial institutions perform better than their conventional counterparts during periods of financial stress? To what extent do systems for managing risk have to be adapted for Islamic financial institutions, given the unique characteristics of their assets and liabilities and the need for shari'ah compliance? These issues have come to prominence since the global financial crisis of 2007-8 and the subsequent recession, and are addressed in this book. The challenges for Islamic financial institutions are explored in an international post Basel II system where banks are required to have more capital and liquidity. Governance issues are also examined, given their influence on client and investor perceptions and their ultimate implications for institutional stability and sustainability.Offers an in-depth assessment of how Islamic banks weathered the financial crisis and what lessons can be learnt. Asks whether Islamic banks are inherently more stable than conventional banks during periods of economic stress. Examines how Islamic banks manage risk, focusing on liquidity risk and the use of forward contracts to mitigate currency risk. Appraises the work of internal shari'ah audit units and the use of shari'ah reports to reduce non-compliance risks. Features case studies from the Gulf, Malaysia, the UK, Pakistan, Turkey and GCC countries.
