Help students understand the significant events, including coalition government and the Quebec Conference, that led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Students will develop an understanding of the diverse groups and important individuals, such as Sir John A. Macdonald, who contributed to the formation and growth of Canada when other provinces and territories joined Confederation. Canadian history is brought to the forefront with our unit on the Confederation of Canada. Students learn about the origins of Canada by understanding the factors leading up to and including the Confederation of Canada. Our resource looks briefly at the historical background of this time and uses several different teaching methods to enable students to gather, interpret, analyze and synthesize information. Students will: understand the key roles of the Fathers of Confederation; recall the dates of important events surrounding the Confederation of Canada and the dates that each province of Canada entered into Confederation; and more. The Confederation of Canada was a series of events that brought our great country into being. The process officially began on July 1, 1867, when the first of four colonies joined together to create the Dominion of Canada, and the process continues to this day. Our resource traces the development of Canada — province by province — from its birth pangs in the mid 1800's, to its present form.
