In this work, the composition of the superfamily Callianassoidea is reassessed and the classification of its included taxa is critically reviewed. The material examined mainly originates from the collections of the Zoological Museum of the University of Copenhagen, and comprises samples from the Galathea Expedition 1950-1952, Dr. Th. Mortensen’s expeditions, including the Java-South African Expedition 1929-1930, and Dr. G. Thorson’s Persian expedition. In all, three of the possibly five families currently incorporated in the Callianassoidea, i.e., Callianassidae, Gourretiidae, and Ctenochelidae, with a total of 12 subfamilies, 20 genera, and 219 species, are represented in this comprehensive revision. The status of the various taxa recognized is placed in the broader context of a re-evaluation of the contents of the infraorder Thalassinidea, in which characters derived from the anatomy of the gastric mill may play a pivotal role. The contents of the book are not only of interest for systematists but also for ecologists and environmental biologists focusing on neritic and benthic biocoenoses, as these mud shrimps are important agents in bioturbation processes of the sea floor.

In the present new classification, the section Callianassida comprises two superfamilies, Axioidea and Callianassoidea, 19 families including one new family and two families with a new status, 8 subfamilies including one subfam. nov., 116 genera including 41 gen. nov. and 8 genera sensu nov., and 419 species including 12 spp. nov. and 2 nom. nov.

Ghost shrimp and mud shrimp in the decapod infraorder Thalassinidea are ecologically important members of many benthic intertidal and shallow subtidal infaunal communities, largely due to the sediment filtration and mixing that result from their burrowing and feeding behavior. These activities considerably modify their immediate environment and have made these cryptic animals extremely interesting to scientists in terms of their behavior, ecology, and classification. Over 20 years ago, seven species of thalassinideans were known from the South Atlantic Bight (Cape Hatteras, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). During this study, the examination of extensive collections from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center (SERTC), and regional institutions, resulted in the identification of 14 species of thalassinideans currently known to occur within this region. The family Axiidae is represented by three species: Axius armatus, Calaxius jenneri, and Paraxiopsis gracilimana; the Callianassidae by six: Biffarius biformis, B. cf. fragilis, Callichirus major, Cheramus marginatus, Gilvossius setimanus, and Necallianassa berylae; the Calocarididae by two: Calocaris templemani and Acanthaxius hirsutimanus; and the families Laomediidae, Thomassiniidae, and Upogebiidae are each represented by one: Naushonia crangonoides, Crosniera wennerae, and Upogebia affinis, respectively. An illustrated key is presented for species level identification and supplemental notes on the ecology, distribution, and taxonomy of the species are provided.

Decapods are a culmination of nearly 600 million years of Crustacean evolution, during which time they have radiated into a variety of superfamilies, families, genera and species which occupy a variety of niches from fresh mountain streams to the abysses of the oceans. This book will fill a gap in the current literature on southern African decapods. Since Barnard published his Descriptive Catalogue of South African Decapod Crustacea in 1950, there have been numerous additions and name changes. This publication updates the taxonomy, and includes ecological and fisheries information. In addition, Kensley’s (1981) distributional checklist for the region has been updated and includes large numbers of new species and records for the region, bringing the total number of decapod to over 1000 species. Although not exhaustive, 262 species are featured, some of which are beautiful, some have commercial or artisinal value, both for consumption and the aquarium, and some have important ecological functions, while others are rare or interesting. For each species there is a photograph, synonymies, common names, a description, ecological information and name derivation (etymology). All the decapod families found in South Africa are described, some new, along with chapters on decapod research history in southern Africa, commercial and artisinal food value of decapods, biodiversity and future research direction. The book is arranged systematically, as taxonomy is based on phylogeny, starting with the earliest forms and progressing to the most derived and advanced forms, and will serve to stimulate interest and future research into southern Africa’s rich decapod biodiversity, especially at a time when biodiversity itself is threatened by global warming, coral bleaching and habitat loss. It will appeal to people interested in Decapoda, including academics, scholars, students, fishermen, aquarists, aquaculturists, recreational snorkel and SCUBA divers, as well as those interested in conservation, biodiversity, management and governance.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Michael Türkay, of the Research Institute and Natural History Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is a tribute to his outstanding international contribution to the study of decapod crustaceans. An extensive account of Michael’s life and achievements is presented, along with thirty-one scientific papers by 62 of his friends and colleagues from around the world. The book’s focus is almost entirely on decapod crustaceans, and covers a variety of topics, including taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography, morphology, palaeontology, genetics, general biology and ecology. Numerous new taxa are described from a number of marine and freshwater groups, including one new genus and 13 new species named in honour of Michael himself. The contents of this volume were originally published in 2017 in Crustaceana volume 90, issue 7-10.
