A legendary era comes to vivid life in this saga of the beautiful, unforgiving American West, where the only thing more vital than hard work is the love of an unforgettable woman. “A sprawling, emotional love story.” —Publishers Weekly The Calder family patriarch is known throughout Montana as a force no one in his right mind would cross. But in New York Times bestselling author Janet Dailey’s latest novel, sometimes love can make even the most stubborn man do crazy things. Lost and left for dead after a violent stampede, a young cowboy battles his way to Montana and a fresh start among the cattlemen wresting vast empires from the wilderness. Joe is no saint, but he proves himself a hero many times over, giving his heart along the way to the fiercely independent midwife who saves his life, then bears his child out of wedlock. Sarah’s ambition is to train as a doctor, but harsh reality dictates a different life path. One that will test her strength and courage but end in the new life of her dreams . . . Dailey fearlessly explores the sheer grit of the women and men who settled the frontier, the characters, both strong and weak, who competed for a piece of the open range, and the fascinating, never more timely story of America's westward expansion.

By the winner of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Literature, a riveting, stylistically audacious modernist epic about the French cavalry's bloody face-off against German Panzer tanks during WWII. On a sunny day in May 1940, the French army sent out the cavalry against the invading German army’s panzer tanks. Unsurprisingly, the French were routed. Twenty-six-year-old Claude Simon was among the French forces. As they retreated, he saw his captain shot off his horse by a German sniper. This is the primal scene to which Simon returns repeatedly in his fiction and nowhere so powerfully as in his most famous novel The Flanders Road. Here Simon’s own memories overlap with those of his central character, Georges, whose captain, a distant relative, dies a similar death. Georges reviews the circumstances and sense—or senselessness—of that death, first in the company of a fellow prisoner in a POW camp and then some years later in the course of an ever more erotically charged visit to the captain’s widow, Corinne. As he does, other stories emerge: Corinne’s prewar affair with the jockey Iglésia, who would become the captain’s orderly; the possible suicide of an eighteenth-century ancestor, whose grim portrait loomed large in Georges’s childhood home; Georges’s learned father, whose books are no help against barbarism. The great question throughout, the question that must be urgently asked even as it remains unanswerable, is whether fiction can confront and respond to the trauma of history.

A Eurasian transformation is underway, and it flows from China. With a geopolitically central location, the country's domestic and international policies are poised to change the face of global affairs. The Belt and Road Initiative has called attention to a deepening Eurasian continentalism that has, argues Kent Calder, much more significant implications than have yet been recognized. In Super Continent, Calder presents a theoretically guided and empirically grounded explanation for these changes. He shows that key inflection points, beginning with the Four Modernizations and the collapse of the Soviet Union; and culminating in China's response to the Global Financial Crisis and Crimea's annexation, are triggering tectonic shifts. Furthermore, understanding China's emerging regional and global roles involves comprehending two ongoing transformations—within China and across Eurasia as a whole—and that the two are profoundly interrelated. Calder underlines that the geo-economic logic that prevailed across Eurasia before Columbus, and that made the Silk Road a central thoroughfare of world affairs for close to two millennia, is reasserting itself once again.
