Many disenchanted Kashmiris continue to demand independence or freedom from India. They would influence the country’s politics, its leaders, parties and institutions and would be interrogated in political, policy and social science circles in the foreseeable future. They would in turn be impacted, redefined and perhaps transformed by political dynamics and social pressure. The first attempt of its kind to analyse the impact of certain emerging trends in politics on upcoming elections anywhere in the world, this book will be a useful addition to election studies and policy making in general.

In Historical Title, Self-Determination and the Kashmir Question Fozia Nazir Lone offers a critical re-examination of the Kashmir question. Through an interdisciplinary approach and international law perspective, she analyses political practices and the substantive international law on the restoration of historical title and self-determination. The book analytically examines whether Kashmir was a State at any point in history; the effect of the 1947 occupation by India/Pakistan; the international law implications of the constitutional incorporation of this territory and the ongoing human rights violations; whether Kashmiris are entitled to restore their historical title through the exercise of self-determination; and whether the Kashmir question could be resolved with the formation of international strategic alliance to curb danger of spreading terrorism in Kashmir.

Focusing on the twin issues of identity and development that are often signifiers of the unravelling politics in the federal polity, the book make a concerted attempt to look at (and beyond) the states by exploring the specificities of the regions within these states. It does so through a comparative study from the vantage point of democratic politics as it unfurls in recent India. Emphasising that regions within the states are not merely politico-administrative instituted constructs but are also imagined or constituted, among others, in historical, geographic, economic, sociological or cultural terms, it argues that any meaningful comparative study of the regions would naturally straddle the disciplinary boundaries of social sciences. The book attempts to go beyond the states and look at the regions within them as a distinctive analytical category for an in-depth study of the democratic politics of identity and development unfolding at the state level.
