Excerpt from Bulletin of Information, 1921, Vol. 13: Entered as Second-Class Mail Matter, Tacoma, Wash., Under Act of Congress, August 24, 1912 It is consequently important that such grades be carefully given. They ought to be a sober effort on the part of the institution giving them, to rank the student in relation to his fellows. But this is quite out of the question if the giv ing Of grades be left entirely to the impulse of the teacher. Some teachers are so benevolent they give too high marks; others by high grades might want to attract students to elective courses; while some give subject-matter too elementary for college grade. Any of these or other causes that might enter to make grades too high or too low (though the fault is less frequent with low grade), would tend to make a stu dent's scholastic record a poor index of his ability This in turn would be an obstacle to the would-be employer or others seeking to rate him. Excerpt from Fordham University Bulletin of Information, 1920-1921, Vol. 13: School of Law Announcement The School in the beginning used the text-book method of in struction, but, after one year, abandoned this method in favor of the case system, which has ever since been used in the School with con stantly increasing success. Under this system, carefully selected col lections of cases are used as the basis of instruction, and certain Of these cases are assigned each day for study. The students who have studied these cases are required to state the facts of each case, the decision reached therein by the court, and the reasons for that decision. The class and the instructor then discuss the decision, and consider whether the given case was rightly de cided, and, if so, what principles of law it establishes. The instruc tor then requires the class to apply these principles to new and different sets of facts, and thus gives the students practice in the art of applying law to varying conditions of fact.
