Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

After a brief account of the recent trends in science indicatiors research, the authors propose a coherent system of scientometric indicators. These indicators are based on the publication performance of each country in 8 science fields and reflect the versatility of the impact of the publication activity in the country in question. The special aim of the indicator system is to characterize and compare the contribution of research-intensive, medium-sized and small countries to the world's overall scientific research activity. Indicator values for 32 such countries are reported and evaluated. Relations to other economic, social and science indicators are discussed.This book is intended both as a data source and an analytic tool for specialists engaged in science policy, science management, science indicators research, scientometrics and other areas of science as well as a tool for practising research scientists.

In a period of two decades Dutch drug policy has evolved in partial opposition to the internationally dominant ideology of prohibitionism. The "normalizing" home policy, together with the compliance to law enforcement in the international arena, make up a rather complicated and ambivalent Dutch position in drug policy. The Dutch drug policy is fully in line with the international control practices against wholesale drug trafficking. In regards to its social drug policy, however, it has become a rare dissenter within an increasingly unifying and compelling international drug policy context. This book gives an account of the national Dutch drug control strategy.

Policy-makers, national administrations, and regulators engage in making laws without the formalities associated with treaties or customary law. This book analyses this informal international lawmaking and its impact on contemporary trends in international interaction, looking at the questions of accountability and effectiveness it raises.

Informal International Lawmaking: Case Studies compiles case studies on instances of informal international lawmaking (IN-LAW) in diverse policy areas, including finance, investment, competition, pharmaceuticals and medical device regulation, food regulation, human rights, disaster management, and trade in diamonds. The term 'informal' international lawmaking is used in contrast and opposition to 'traditional' international lawmaking. More concretely, IN-LAW is informal in the sense that it dispenses with certain formalities traditionally linked to international law. These formalities may have to do with the process, actors and output involved. The literature has mostly criticized IN-LAW for its 'accountability deficits'. The chapters in this book, hence, do not simply give a descriptive overview of the case studies, but approach them from an accountability perspective. In this context, different questions are raised, such as: Is IN-LAW subject to any accountability measures? How accountable are IN-LAW participants to their constituents? How accountable are they towards those affected by their decisions? Are the accountability measures available at the international or at the domestic level? The book also examines how IN-LAW is elaborated and subsequently received in domestic legal systems, using the Netherlands and Brazil as case studies.

Holism and reductionism are traditionally seen as incompatible views or approaches to nature. Here Looijen argues that they should rather be seen as mutually dependent and hence co-operating research programmes. He sheds some interesting new light on the emergence thesis, its relation to the reduction thesis, and on the role and status of functional explanations in biology. He discusses several examples of reduction in both biology and ecology, showing the mutual dependence of holistic and reductionist research programmes. Ecologists are offered separate chapters, clarifying some major, yet highly and controversial ecological concepts, such as `community', `habitat', and `niche'. The book is the first in-depth study of the philosophy of ecology. Darwinism is one of the most successful scientific theories, and its validity is largely unquestioned within the scientific community. Most criticism comes from creationist streams of thought, and primarily focuses on aspects of improbability, such as on the alleged improbability of the origin of life, or of accidental mutations and natural selection yielding the astonishing complexity of living beings. In this work, a new criticism of the theory of natural selection is introduced. Its aim is to show that a salient characteristic of living beings, sexual reproduction, defies Darwinism, and not based on an improbability, but on an impossibility of explanation. Moreover, it is a critique that does not endorse creationism, but demands that the discussion about the explanation of organic phenomena should be held in a much broader philosophical context.
