The collection brings together texts of Brazilian researchers who are dedicated to themes related to studies of youth cultures: social interactions, subcultures, identities and belonging, pop culture, social movements, migration, consumption and materialities, generational exchanges, media representations and digital media, among others. The objective is to promote a broad dialogue that includes fields of knowledge such as communication and social sciences, as well as local perspectives that represent the huge and rich diversity of the Brazilian regions. At the same time, the book proposes to discuss the reflexivity of such local youth cultures in the face of a global context that challenges, with ruptures and permanencies, the very idea of youth. The book seeks to fill the gap of a selection of scientific texts by Brazilian authors, about Brazilian youth cultures, aimed at foreign researchers.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Brazil struggled to rebuild its democracy after twenty years of military dictatorship, experiencing financial crises, corruption scandals, political protest, and intense electoral contention. In the midst of this turmoil, Ann Mische argues in this remarkable book, youth activists of various stripes played a vital and unrecognized role, contributing new forms of political talk and action to Brazil's emerging democracy. Drawing upon extensive and rich ethnography as well as formal network analysis, Mische tracks the lives of young activists through intersecting political networks, including student movements, church-based activism, political parties, nongovernmental organizations, and business and professional organizations. What is the place of young people in society today? This book presents a searching and comprehensive picture of youth, demonstrating both its diversity and singularity, and helping to dispel many of the myths, discriminations, stigmas and prejudices attached to this segment of society. Youth and the future What will become of today’s young people in Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America? Will they be supportive of the world they live in? Or are they doomed to be criminal drop-outs? The authors investigate to which extent different and contradictory trends of social modernisation and economic progress determine the biographical development and social integration of young people in different countries and world regions. Thus, the authors look at the role young people themselves can play in the future; either as construc tive social actors or as a problematic – and partly excluded – group unable to face the challenges of a permanently changing world.

In this book, Ethel Kosminsky studies the Japanese emigration to the planned colony of Bastos in São Paulo, Brazil in the early twentieth century. She explores the stories of Japanese immigrants who replaced the labor of recently-freed slaves on coffee plantations, and their descendants’ return migration to Japan when the Bastos economy began to suffer in the late twentieth century. Using interviews and fieldwork done in both Bastos and Japan, Kosminsky integrates sociological, historical, political, economic, and ethnographic knowledge to analyze the consequences of these temporary labor migrations on the immigrants and their families.
