IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF EIGHT MEN OUT . . . the untold story of baseball’s ORIGINAL SCANDAL Did the Chicago Cubs throw the World Series in 1918—and get away with it? Who were the players involved—and why did they do it? Were gambling and corruption more widespread across the leagues than previously believed? Were the players and teams “cursed” by their actions? Finally, is it time to rewrite baseball history? With exclusive access to surprising new evidence, Sporting News reporter Sean Deveney details a scandal at the core of baseball’s greatest folklore—in a golden era as exciting and controversial as our sports world today. This inside look at the pivotal year of 1918 proves that baseball has always been a game overrun with colorful characters, intense human drama, and explosive controversy. "The Original Curse is not just about baseball. It is a sweeping portrait of America at war in 1918. . . . In the end, the proper question is not, ‘How could a player from that era fix the World Series?’ It’s, ‘How could he not?’” —Ken Rosenthal, FOX Sports, from the Introduction "Sean Deveney plays connect-the-dots in this intriguing account of a possible conspiracy to throw the 1918 World Series. Thoroughly researched and well written, The Original Curse is a must-read for baseball fans and anyone who loves a good mystery. Is Max Flack the Shoeless Joe of the 1918 Cubs? Deveney lays out the case and let's readers decide if the fix was in." —Paul Sullivan, Cubs beat writer, Chicago Tribune "This book gives the reader a fun and honest look at baseball as it used to be-- the good guys, the gamblers, the cheaters, the drunks, the inept leaders. But, more than that, it puts those characters into the context of Chicago, Boston and America at the time of World War I, and you wind up with a unique way to explain the motivations of those characters." —David Kaplan, host, Chicago Tribune Live and WGN's Sports Central “Deveney’s painstaking study of the 1918 World Series between the Cubs and Red Sox argues that the Black Sox scandal was not an aberration and might have had an antecedent. Deveney’s scholarship does not detract from his ability to spin a good tale: his tendency to imagine players’ conversations will remind readers of Leigh Montville’s The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth.... A welcome companion to Susan Dellinger’s Red Legs and Black Sox: Edd Roush and the Untold Story of the 1919 World Series, Deveney’s book contributes greatly to our understanding of this decisive period in baseball and American morals." —Library Journal

As the prophets have foretold, a child of power has been born unto the Turtle People of the Iroquois Nation. The Elders call him False Face Child, for he is the son of a powerful forest spirit. A living talisman, the child has inhuman eyes—black mirrors, ageless and deep—and all fear him. All but Jumping Badger, the most powerful war leader of the Bear People. He destroys an entire village to take the boy to use as a spiritual weapon. But his triumph is short-lived. The Bear People suffer terrible visions and hear the voices of the spirits. Strange ailments and mysterious deaths take them one by one. Though he is a seer, False Face Child is also a sad and lonely young boy named Rumbler. Twelve-year-old Wren befriends him and together they escape across the winter landscape of New York and Ontario with Jumping Badger close behind. He now fears the boy’s power and seeks to kill him. Their only hope is to stay alive long enough to find Rumbler’s legendary father, known only as The Disowned.

As a Wiccan, Tito Russell is a firm believer in magic -- just not the fairytale, happily-ever-after kind. He and Matt have been dating for years, they’ve met each other’s families, and everyone seems to agree Matt is “good enough.” Despite ongoing problems with Matt’s jealous and possessive tendencies, they move into an apartment together in a new town. Tito finds a job as a clerk at a used bookstore. Everything is working out. Then the local Wiccan circle, which is hosting a workshop, accepts Tito’s RSVP but not Matt’s. Despite Matt’s jealous whining, Tito refuses to give up his shot at joining a circle and making friends in their new town. When Tito shows up at the house where the circle is holding their meeting, he discovers his sexy upstairs neighbor from the apartment complex, Leo, is a member. As soon as they shake hands, magical sparks fly. Tito and Leo both feel it. During the barbeque after the workshop, Leo seeks out Tito, and they talk for hours. Leo is everything Matt isn’t: outgoing, deep, and kind. The problem is that Matt knows it, too, and for once his jealous paranoia that Tito is attracted to another guy is on target. Despite Tito’s being loyal and refusing to become more than friends with Leo, Matt unleashes his full rage, ripping off the mask of the lovable nerd and becoming a rageful abuser. As soon as Leo sees the bruises, he convinces Tito to take a stand and dump Matt. But with Matt’s behavior getting progressively more unhinged, where will it end? With Leo and Tito getting together, or with both of them dead at Matt’s hands?
