Bedford is a name from British automotive history that became synonymous with quality commercial vehicles. Between 1930 and the late 1980s few companies, large or small, did have at least a couple of Bedfords within their fleet. These were dependable vehicles used by fleet operators all over the UK and beyond. When the new lesiure activity of motorcaravanning became popular in the mid-1950's, it was hardly surprising that converters turned their attention to the Bedford CA light commercial van, which had been unveiled in 1951. The CA and CF ranges were the perfect size for compact camper vans that could nevertheless provide a good level of comfort and luxury. Add in the smaller HA and the later Midi and Rascal models, and Bedford offered a host of attractive options. Here Martin Watts, founder of the Classic Camper Club, tells the complete story of all the Bedford camper and motorhome vehicles.

Lars Eriksen and Kate Trant outline the cultural and social history of the camper van and motorhome in the USA, UK and Europe, looking at a range of phenomena from surf and hippy culture, to family holidays and travel in retirement years. A range of vehicles from recent decades is presented in detail, within the context of their technical development as well as the design strategies that dictated their appearances. Whether about a pioneering spirit, large horizons and wide open spaces, economic travel or a comfortable change of scenery, what is common to camper vans and motorhomes is the need to create a 'home away from home.' This book illustrates the culture of camper van and motorhome travel by looking at the owners and their clubs, telling stories of road trips, adventures and epic voyages.

Dormobile, a name inescapably linked with camper vans, grew out of a Folkestone coachbuilding company called Martin Walter's. In 1957, the first really affordable camper van, the Dormobile, was introduced. It was a great success and within a couple of years, over 10,000 had been sold. The factory produced camper vans in such huge numbers throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s that they were by far the leading producer of motorcaravans within the UK. The pop-up, candy-striped roofs became a common sight at campsites and on beaches all over Britain and abroad. Dormobile used a variety of base vehicles but perhaps the best known are the Bedford CA Romany, the Volkswagen split and bay vans and the Land Rover, all instantly recognizable with their pop-up roofs. The company also made a series of coach-built models including the Debonair and Newlander on Bedford and Toyota chassis.
