This guide is designed to assist all those who are responsible for providing or overseeing formal education or practical experience that forms part of the initial professional development of aspiring professional accountants, or the continuing professional development of professional accountants. It is particularly relevant to professional accountancy organizations. It is also intended for policy makers and regulators who determine which organizations are licensed to certify professional accountants and related specializations, for example, audit professionals. The purpose of the guide is to • increase understanding of the gap between the current skills of many accountants in some regions and the skills that are relevant in increasingly digitized and globalized economies; • convey the essential features of Competency-Based Accounting Education, Training, and Certification (CBAETC); • provide a common reference framework for organizations pursuing CBAETC and the consultants working with them; • assist countries in developing in-country plans and implementing in-country processes that produce accountants with higher-order skills relevant to their economy’s rapidly evolving needs; and • improve financial reporting, auditing, and regulation. This guide complements and builds on International Education Standards (IES™) of the International Accounting Education Standards Board™ (IAESB™).

As the single most populous nation in Africa, Nigeria recently overtook South Africa as the largest economy on the continent. Natural resources, oil and gas in particular, comprise the country’s single largest revenue-earner but the 170m person economy also has seen significant activity in recent years into the industrial, financial, telecoms and – as of 2013 – power sectors. Hydrocarbons reserves have traditionally attracted the vast majority of domestic and foreign investment in Nigeria. Oil production capacity has remained at roughly 2.5m barrels per day (bpd) since the start of 2000, although output fell to 2.2m bpd on average in 2012. Still, the country has long operated below its true potential and government efforts in recent years have sought to increase local value addition, by boosting refining capacity and minimising theft and bunkering. The country’s banking sector has been through a significant shake-up as well, resulting in a far healthier and more robust financial industry, while reforms in the telecoms and agricultural sectors have strengthened medium-term prospects.

After barely half a century of experience, Islamic banking has become established as a new niche industry across the world offering new and sophisticated financial products designed to be compliant with the principles of Islamic legal principles and common law. This comprehensive book explores the theory, principles and practices underpinning this rapidly expanding sector of banking. Expert contributors ¿ including eminent scholars and senior practitioners in the field ¿ examine the roots of the principles of ethical Islamic financial transactions, which have evolved over several millennia, on issuesincluding usury, interest rates, financial contracting for funding enterprises, for mortgages, for leasing and other financial transactions. Regulatory and governance issues are discussed, and the practice and operation of Islamicfinancial institutions are explained via three distinct case studies. Importantly, the final chapter looks at what steps are being taken to provide professional accreditation to Islamic banking professional personnel, and prescribes requirements for training in this growing industry.

In the current business climate the impact of the volume and nature of regulatory change and the regulatory risk arising from this is a significant business risk for regulated firms and regulators alike. As a consequence, management of this risk is increasingly high on the board agenda of regulated firms, with those business functions whose activities support this, such as Compliance, facing increasing levels of challenge in their efforts to be effective. The Changing Face of Compliance addresses core aspects of this challenge, considering the relationship between regulation and compliance and key influences on both, offering insight into the effectiveness of current approaches and addressing practical compliance challenges. Sharon Ward explains how the role of Compliance might be strengthened and those who work within it further enabled to support the current focus on improving standards in business, offering recommendations for enhancing this role. The text includes a mix of hands-on advice, examples and research based on the experiences of practitioners, educators and regulators drawn from across a wide range of jurisdictions and sectors. This is a thoughtful and timely book, whether you are concerned about the growing and changing implications of regulatory risk; the benefit of leveraging additional value from your Compliance function or your own Compliance role; or ways of transforming and sustaining the function to ensure its continued relevance to the business.
