This book is about the subject of higher smoothness in separable real Banach spaces. It brings together several angles of view on polynomials, both in finite and infinite setting. Also a rather thorough and systematic view of the more recent results, and the authors work is given. The book revolves around two main broad questions: What is the best smoothness of a given Banach space, and its structural consequences? How large is a supply of smooth functions in the sense of approximating continuous functions in the uniform topology, i.e. how does the Stone-Weierstrass theorem generalize into infinite dimension where measure and compactness are not available? The subject of infinite dimensional real higher smoothness is treated here for the first time in full detail, therefore this book may also serve as a reference book.

"When do the Lebesgue-Bochner function spaces contain a copy or a complemented copy of any of the classical sequence spaces?" This problem and the analogous one for vector- valued continuous function spaces have attracted quite a lot of research activity in the last twenty-five years. The aim of this monograph is to give a detailed exposition of the answers to these questions, providing a unified and self-contained treatment. It presents a great number of results, methods and techniques, which are useful for any researcher in Banach spaces and, in general, in Functional Analysis. This book is written at a graduate student level, assuming the basics in Banach space theory.

This important work provides a comprehensive overview of the properties of Banachspaces related to strict convexity and a survey of significant applications-uniting a wealthof information previously scattered throughout the mathematical literature in a well-organized,accessible format. After introducing the subject through a discussion of the basic results of linear functionalanalysis, this unique book proceeds to investigate the characteristics of strictly convexspaces and related classes, including uniformly convex spaces, and examine important applicationsregarding approximation theory and fixed point theory. Following this extensivetreatment, the book discusses complex strictly convex spaces and related spaces- alsowith applications. Complete, clearly elucidated proofs accompany results throughout thebook, and ample references are provided to aid further research of the subject.Strict Convexity and Complex Strict Convexity is essential fot mathematicians and studentsinterested in geometric theory of Banach spaces and applications to approximationtheory and fixed point theory, and is of great value to engineers working in optimizationstudies. In addition, this volume serves as an excellent text for a graduate course inGeometric Theory of Banach Spaces.

The book consists of solicited articles from a select group of mathematicians and physicists working at the interface between positivity and the geometry, combinatorics or analysis of polynomials of one or several variables. It is dedicated to the memory of Julius Borcea (1968-2009), a distinguished mathematician, Professor at the University of Stockholm. With his extremely original contributions and broad vision, his impact on the topics of the planned volume cannot be underestimated. All contributors knew or have exchanged ideas with Dr. Borcea, and their articles reflect, at least partially, his heritage.
