As it is believed and witnessed that the great personalities were often the products of their own time. Political, religious, social, economic and cultural environment mould them and they, in turn, remould. Babu Jagjivan Ram, endearingly called ‘Babuji’, is one of such great personalities with rare qualities who was influenced by the contemporary socio-economic and political conditions and contributed to change the prevailing environment. He occupies an important place among the great. He made substantial contribution to the nation building during pre and post independence era and rose to great heights by dint of his determination, hard work and commitment. I have great pleasure in placing the report of One Day National Seminar on Forgotten Heroes: Stories of Unsung Heroes, Freedom Fighters”. The background of this National Seminar , undertaken with the financial assistance of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. The Seminar attempted to recall and remember forgotten Heroes of our freedom movement, many of whom might be renowed yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recalling and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we atke our unsung heroes along this journey of grwoth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and respected. Thanks are primarily due to financial support by Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and their constant support during the whole process. I am also highly thankful to Convener, Debates and Seminar Committee of Government Degree College Tral who provided all kind of support in organising this national seminar. I am also highly thankful to other colleagues who supported me during this event. Dr. M.Shafi Bhat

Relationships between peace, politics and religion are often controversial, and sometimes problematic. Religion is a core source of identity for billions of people around the world and it is hardly surprising that sometimes it becomes involved in conflicts. At the same time, we can see religion involved not only in conflict. It is also central to conflict resolution, peace-making and peacebuilding. Religious involvement is often necessary to try to end hatred and differences, frequently central to political conflicts especially, but not only, in the Global South. Evidence shows that religious leaders and faith-based organisations can play constructive roles in helping to end violence, and in some cases, build peace via early warnings of conflict, good offices once conflict has erupted, as well as advocacy, mediation and reconciliation. The chapters of this book highlight that religion can encourage both conflict and peace, through the activities of people individually and collectively imbued with religious ideas and ideals.
