The author is a new-comer to New Zealand. In the footsteps of Abel Tasman the author might have thought New Zealand to be a Dutch Colony! Life in the far North soon revealed characteristics that proved myopic aspirations were hard at work. But the author has a contagious sense of humour. And without the fine tuned skills in English expression the inimitable style of his book adds colour and fascination to the events he describes. I think the reader will be able to identify with some of the humorous situations and has probably met some of the officious personalities who take centre stage in a parochial community. To read this book written from a fresh perspective should be a therapeutic exercise to some of us too cloistered in some secluded pockets of post-imperialism and should be on the bookshelf of every immigrant wishing to understand the heart beat of their newly elected country.

This book is a sequel to the author's first book 'Awesome Adventures of an Immigrant' where he went into the footsteps of Abel Tasman to discover New Zealand. Upon returning to his home country he felt like a new-comer. In the same pointy style guided by his imaginary opponent 'Hugo' the author tries to make sense of his country by following some history of it. As in New Zealand some myopic characters are at work, and the peculiar mind of the author puts a magnifying glass on them. Without the fine tuned skills in English expression the inimitable style of his writing adds color and fascination to the events he describes. I think the reader will be able to identify with some of the humorous situations and has probably met some of the personalities which are rooted into far historic mythos. In this he lays down his own weaknesses and to read the book written from a fresh perspective should be a therapeutic exercise to some of us too cloistered and should be on the bookshelf of everyone traveling or dealing with some aspects of dutch life. As the tale progresses, these aspects might be more than many people would realize.

After returning safely from their adventure through time to learn about Chief Pontiac's rebellion (Book One), several of Miss Pepper's students again need Professor Tuesday's help with their studies. Owen and Rachel must prepare a special report about the history of immigration to Michigan. The research doesn't always go smoothly. Throughout the day, the kids dodge problems and overcome difficulties-- teaching readers about conflict-- while learning how immigrants struggled to live and work in Michigan. They discover that although people have many differences, in the end we are all very much the same. One of their "instructors" uses American Sign Language to communicate. Readers will learn about the important role the Erie Canal played in immigration to Michigan, the building of Detroit, Michigan becoming a state in 1837, the establishment of the towns of Frankenmuth (Germans) and Holland (Dutch), Hamtramck (Poles) and Mackinac Island (Irish); early mining in Copper County; the lumbering era (1850s); and Sudanese immigrants today.--Publisher.

This is the story of an uncle, born in a sleepy Italian town, who came to the United States during the great wave of immigration in the first decades of the 20th Century and who eventually set out on his own path, moving to California and planting his own family roots. While the book is filled with photos and lots of stories about his life growing up, going to high school, finding his true love, and building a wide circle of family and friends, it also is a story about a young immigrant boy who - thousands of miles away from his familiar, comfortable boyhood home - decided to discover for himself all that his new country had to offer. While his story starts many years ago, Albert's Journey is much like the many millions of immigrants who came to the United States - and still come - to find a better life. It's a warm, humorous reminder that anybody new and unfamiliar in our country is really, at the heart of it, not that much different from any of us who desire a happy life full of love, family, friends, and a passion for doing whatever we hope to do. The book is ideal for young preteen and adolescent readers who, in studying the history of immigration in their school history and social science classes, want to learn more about the personal experiences and adventures that immigrants, especially those close to their age, found in their new national home. The book is filled with photos, used with permission, from family albums, archives, and friends.

Hawaii! Manuela's small Spanish village buzzed with tales of life in a faraway land free from starvation and angst. In the early months of 1911, with nine children and four Silvan Hernandez (and Gonzales) families, they boarded a British immigrant steamer, the SS Orteric, bound for the Hawaiian Islands. Sugar plantation owners wanted immigrants from Portugal and Spain to work their plantations. They paid for passage, guaranteed work for them, school for their children. In a starving and poor time where the military brandished a strong arm, the families took a gamble along with other families in their village; a mass exodus of friends and family---leaving everything they knew---sometimes everyone they loved. Manuela's epic immigration story is filled with tragedy and triumph. Chosen to watch over her brothers as the family makes their way south to La Linea at the Rock of Gibraltar, she was sure her heart would break into pieces. Living through the trials of traveling through Spain to the coast, a place she'd never seen was a nightmare and a dream. An ocean, ships, big cities and fears waited. The quagmire of traveling in steerage for two months added to her grief but the beauty and world of flowers in Hawaii lured her into bits of happiness she hadn't imagined. And meeting her young man in Hawaii and finding him again in California gave her the intensity of life that the trek from Spain promised. This lively memoir is based on the author's grandmother; Spain and Hawaii come alive and encompass five generations, a narrative non-fiction laced with embellishment.
