The story ends with its gradual decline commercially and revival as an artistic medium in the mid-20th century. The book considers the process from a global standpoint and makes connections between developments in various European countries between Europe and the United States.

In the second edition of the definitive account of Igor Stravinsky's life and work, arranged in two separate sections, Eric Walter White revised the whole book, completing the biographical section by taking it up to Stravinsky's death in 1971.
