The book features Germaine de Gournay-Martin, a snobbish daughter who belongs to a wealthy family, who is finally going to marry the penniless Jacques, Duke of Charmerace. He was originally called Arsène Lopin, until a local politician of the same name protested. The character was first introduced in a series of short stories serialised in the magazine Je sais tout.
