Drawing on more than 30 case studies from around the world, this book offers a multitude of examples for improving the governance of small-scale fisheries. Many fishery biologists and policy makers involved in inland fisheries management and planning are unaware of GIS technology and its potential for fisheries planning and management. The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active for the last 19 years in promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture. Promotional activities have been carried out through training, projects, field missions, and oral presentations and publications. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a "do-it-yourself" manual giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science. The overall objective of this manual is to encourage fishery managers to use this tool (GIS) to foster the sustainable use of natural resources. There are five main sections in the manual: GIS concepts and functions and key tools provided by ArcView 3.x, Geographic coordinate system and map projections, Raster data and analysis, Regression analysis, and Application case studies. All sections are accompanied by exercises that have been designed to illustrate key applications of GIS in inland and marine fisheries management. Also, a custom-designed ArcView grid regression extension is included to show the integration of GIS with surplus production models.

Aquaculture, the farming in water of aquatic animals and aquatic plants, has seen extraordinary growth over recent years in terms of production levels and as regards its share of production of aquatic animals and algae. Although the most recent figures show a slight slowdown in the rate of growth of the sector (FAO, 2022), aquaculture is still seen to have tremendous potential. Many developing countries have high aspirations for rapid aquaculture development in order to feed their fast-growing populations and to increase export earnings. The aim of this study is to identify the essential elements of a legal framework for sustainable aquaculture. For the fact is that in many countries the growth of aquaculture appears to have outpaced the development of the legislation and legal frameworks to govern aquaculture. This study is intended both to act as a guide to the complexity of legal frameworks for aquaculture and also to serve as the background or resource document for the Aquaculture Legal Assessment and Revision Tool (ALART).

The FAO Expert Workshop on Methods and Indicators for Evaluating the Contribution of Small-scale Aquaculture to Sustainable Rural Development held in Nha Trang, Viet Nam, from 24 to 28 November 2009, attempted to develop an indicator system to measure the contribution of SSA. The workshop used a number of processes and steps in the developing the indicator system, including: (i) understanding the subject of measurements; (ii) identifying an analytical framework and ratting criteria (iii) developing a list of SSA contributions; (iv) categorising the contributions; (v) devising and organising the indicators of contribution; and (vi) measuring the indicators. The major outcome was the development, through an iterative process, of an indicator system which can provide a good measure of the contribution of SSA based on agreed criteria (accuracy, measurability and efficiency) and the sustainable livelihood approach analytical framework which consists of five capital assets (human, financial, physical, social and natural) and can be used for various livelihoods options.
