Presents papers from a workshop on remote sensing and hydrology. Topics of papers include glacier snow line mapping, derivation of lake areas and elevations, estimating surface evaporation, hydrological modelling, estimation of evapotranspiration, rainfall estimation, satellite and radar techniques, vegetation/hydrologic flux relationships, soil moisture measurement, soil classification, flood management applications, and sensing of surface energy heat flux.

The two principal topics of this workshop were hydrological modelling and microwave radiometry. The hydrologic models session concentrated on applications of GOES, NOAA, and Landsat data in various hydrologic watershed models and contained discussion on means of increasing the utility of satellites for hydrologic modellers. The microwave hydrology session focused on promising applications and the benefits of this method of data collection for monitoring, modelling and forecasting at field and basin scales. The publication includes the texts of all session presentations and related workshops. A list of participants concludes the proceedings.

River basins are complex areas, combining the natural processes of precipitation, evapotranspiration, surface water and groundwater runoff with man-made features such as dams and reservoirs, diversions and irrigation schemes, and industrial and urban water uses. Computer models may be constructed to represent these natural and man-made processes. Such models are used to help understand processes that are difficult to measure (such as evaporation) and to study the effects of changes in land cover, water management or climate on the natural and man-made processes.

The book aims to address the interdisciplinary targets of watershed management in mountain regions based on the current knowledge of the subject. The focus of the book is particularly on monitoring, research, and modelling the interactions between the climate, water cycle, and aquatic ecosystem. The issues of watershed management in mountain regions in different parts of Europe, Africa, America and Asia have been the central theme of the book, which is basically divided into five sections: Institutional aspects in control of mountain regions; Stream-flow processes in mountain catchments; Water chemistry and biota in mountain streams and lakes; Effects of forest practices and climate change on hydrological phenomena; and Soil conservation and control of floods and landslides. The contributions have been peer-reviewed and the interdisciplinary team of authors includes experts from the specialised areas of geography, hydrology, chemistry, biology, forestry, ecology, economy and sociology. The practical applications and management strategies mentioned in the book, deal with the integrated resource management approach, based on the compromise between the development, conservation/ protection of the nature. Finally, the socio-economic and cultural aspects, and ecosystem prevalent in a mountain catchment are discussed in detail.
