Known as the "Big Book," the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous has helped millions of people worldwide get and stay sober since the first edition appeared in 1939. Opening chapters articulate A.A.’s program of recovery from alcoholism — the original Twelve Steps — and recount the personal histories of A.A.'s co-founders, Bill W. and Dr. Bob. In the pages that follow, more than 40 A.A. members share how they stopped drinking and found a new healthier and more serene way of life through the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Whether reading passages at meetings, reading privately for personal reflection, or working with a sponsor, the Big Book can be a source of inspiration, guidance and comfort on the journey to recovery. This Fourth Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous has been approved by the General Service Conference.

Here is a special deluxe edition of a book that has changed millions of lives and launched the modern recovery movement: Alcoholics Anonymous. This edition not only reproduces the original 1939 text of Alcoholics Anonymous, but as a special bonus features the complete 1941 Saturday Evening Post article “Alcoholics Anonymous” by journalist Jack Alexander, which, at the time, did as much as the book itself to introduce millions of seekers to AA’s program. Alcoholics Anonymous has touched and transformed myriad lives, and finally appears in a volume that honors its posterity and impact.

Through a world that looks so normal, when you begin to peel back the layers, you find the hell I called life. You will follow a child through a life without hope as my parents introduced me to poverty, drug addiction, alcoholism, and insanity. From the south side of San Antonio, a family destroys itself from dark corners of insanity kept secret from a lack of resources at a time when so little was known about the disease. When drugs enter an already bad family picture, the painting is further distorted. Fleeing a mentally disturbed mother who forced me to have more than one brush with death at the hand of a stepfather with a gun and a heavy fist, I was taught that you can kill, all in the name of love. This forced me to a life on the streets with a father I thought cared. A father with his own addiction that would take me to an underworld that no child of thirteen should ever see. With an in-depth look at the real life of addiction and the consequences, I will take you with me down this road and bring you to the other side, which is called recovery. Not just from the alcohol and the drugs, but from the heart.

Mothers of addicted and alcoholic children share a deep connection—one that is rarely understood by anyone who hasn’t experienced a similar path. Sharing our perspectives helps us all grow stronger, together. These meditations continue the tradition of Hazelden’s beloved series of daily readings by providing moments of recognition, confession, and healing for those who are realizing that recovery rarely follows a neat or comfortable path. Along the way, we plant beautiful roses only to be injured by their thorns, and we pull up unwanted dandelions that, at times, are our only source of wishes. By sharing the realities we never expected our families to face, mothers of addicted children support each other through experiences that can only be feared and imagined by others. From our shared struggles emerge opportunities for personal growth. Tending Dandelions is a vital source of wisdom, support, and strength that helps us begin our own journey of recovery. “We all need to take a closer look at the things we’ve avoided—the things lurking around in this place where love and addiction meet—so we’re as strong as we can be.” —Sandra Swenson, author of Tending Dandelions

What else can I say? I cry black teardrops. Fake tears, a hustler's tears through years and years of drug addiction here in New Orleans. The Big Sleazy, I mean, the Big Easy. This is what I dislike about myself to this very day. My past. All the lying to loved ones, cheating, stealing, in and out of different prisons. Learning and teaching myself how to jose (do time) like a real career criminal. The lifestyle has tattooed itself across my brain after twenty-one years of being a junkie. One point in my life a long time ago, I was a good kid. Played sports, had lots of good friends, came from a prominent, upscale family. Then, a big bad wolf came into my life, a child molester which we delve into when the story unfolds about what happened that truly messed me up as a child. This may have been the start of the downward trajectory I chose in life, and my bottom is what drug addiction has done to me. Turned me into a hustler, a cheat, a liar, a criminal.
