In this revised edition of his classic work—the first modern book on anxiety following Freud and Kierkegaard—psychologist Rollo May brings order and lucidity to the subject of anxiety. Rollo May challenges the idea that "mental health is living without anxiety," believing it is essential to being human. He explores how it can relieve boredom, sharpen sensibilities, and produce the tension necessary to preserve human existence. May sees a link extending from anxiety to intelligence, creativity, and originality, and guides the reader away from destructive ways to positive ways of dealing with anxiety. He convincingly proposes that anxiety can impel personal change, as it is only by confronting and coping with it that self-realization can occur.

First published in 2001. This is Volume 10 of ten of a series on the science of Mental Health. Originally published in 2001, this study looks at fear and anxiety. During the past decade there has been substantial progress in the understanding of one emotion in particular: fear. There are descriptions of some of the clinical syndromes followed by sections on epidemiology, genetic and environmental risk factors, and natural history (course of illness). Because anxiety disorders so often co-occur with other mental disorders, there is a section devoted to this issue. The volume also includes an article on the evolutionary psychology of anxiety disorders and a long section on brain and behavior that, among other issues, illustrates current attempts to use new insights into fear circuitry in the brain to help investigate the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders. The volume ends with a section on treatment. In some sections there are articles on panic disorder, PTSD, GAD, social anxiety disorder, and, where appropriate, childhood anxiety disorders (which are not always readily separated into their adult forms). Because simple phobias cause relatively little harm or impairment compared with the other anxiety disorders, they are little discussed.

In her first book, Beneath the Surface, Karie takes and translates her lesson from counseling young girls and women to what we desiremeaningful and authentic relationships without having to create and maintain a variety of masks to wear. Now in Identity Crisis, Karie helps women recapture and reclaim their God-given identity. I think for many, our identity is broken. In an increasingly technological world, our identity gets broken more and more, or certainly, we run the risk of it doing so. We now have the ability to be a culprit and a victim of identity theft by our own hands at the same time. Standing before God on my day of judgment, I wonder what I will really be accountable for. I was not who God designed me to be. The identity given to me was not the identity I lived my life as. Instead, I twisted it, distorted it, and mangled it beyond recognition so that I adapted into an identity I thought the world expected of me. I played God. Will that be my offense? If so, I plead guilty. I imagine there is more than enough evidence to convict me. In Identity Crisis, we will discuss the self-created barriers to true relationship. If we live behind a mask, we can impress, but we cannot connect. That doesnt sound right, does it? That is not the story I want to be a part of and to have as my life. It sounds lonely. Lets take this journey together.
