The fourth international symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences took place in Adelaide, South Australia during the week 16-20 August 1982. This volume contains a record of the centenary activities celebrating Sir Douglas Mawson and the one hundred and seventy-four papers that were presented by delegates for discussion over the five days. Sir Douglas Mawson was part of the first team to reach the magnetic South Pole, a leading geologist and scientific figure during the heroic age of of antarctic exploration. The papers presented during the symposium were divided into fifteen categories covering east and west Antarctica, marine, land and glacial geology, plate tectonics, islands, peninsulas, climatic change and Precambrian and Cenozoic era activity. The two hundred persons from sixteen countries who attended the symposium brought together a wide range of the most current expertise and research to share, of which this volume provides a record.

A comprehensive single-authored book to introduce students and researchers to the marine geology of the Antarctic.

Sixty articles arranged in eight thematic sections refer to most recent geological and geophysical results of Antarctic research. The Precambrian of the East Antarctic shield and its geological history is considered as well as sub-ice topography, geophysics and stratigraphy, sedimentology and geophysics of the surrounding Southern Ocean. Particular emphasis is given to the connection of the Antarctic and the surrounding continents when forming part of Gondwana.

Geological information from Antarctica has so far been published in expedition reports, conference proceedings, and science journals. This information is thus not readily accessible to Earth scientists who are interested, but not directly involved, in Antarctic research. The Geology ofAntarctica bridges this gap with each chapter presenting an authoritative review of a particular aspect of Antarctic geology. The text provides descriptions of all major rock units found in Antarctica, as well as reviews of Antarctic palaeontology, geophysics, petroleum prospects, and mineral resources.
