Excerpt from Annual Report of the School Committee of the City of Providence: Presented July 8, 1878 The average number of pupils in our primarv school rooms is over fifty, while in many cases the number reaches seventy, and in two or three known instances has passed beyond a hundred. It is manifest that such numbers cannot be comfortably accommodated in the rooms provided, and it is worthy of note that some of the poorest rooms have the greatest number of children. This evil is increased by the fact that children in the lower schools are more susceptible to injury from an impure atmosphere than older ones, as they are also more liable to contagious diseases. On, the whole, we feel that there is no want so pressing as that of better accommodations for our primary schools.
