In the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum are more than six hundred ancient lamps that span the sixth century BCE to the seventh century CE, most from the Roman Imperial period and largely created in Asia Minor or North Africa. These lamps have much to reveal about life, religion, pottery, and trade in the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Most of the Museum’s lamps have never before been published, and this extensive typological catalogue will thus be an invaluable scholarly resource for art historians, archaeologists, and those interested in the ancient world. The main purpose of this book is to present a catalogue of the terracotta lamps and moulds used for their production, excavated from the site of Negotino Gradište in the Republic of North Macedonia during excavations conducted by Macedonian and Polish archaeologists over the period from 2007 to 2014. The volume starts with an introduction giving basic information about the site and some summary information about lamps in antiquity. The catalogue consists of 157 artefacts, which are grouped chronologically and then typologically. The book contains drawings and photographic plates, which are presented at the end of the volume. With full responsibility I can unequivocally state that the book presents a very high scientific level. The material is clearly presented by the Author, who constantly shows her extensive knowledge of the subject. This is a very good and well-composed publication. The fourth catalogue in a series that documents the renowned Cesnola Collection of Cypriot Art, this book focuses on the collection’s 453 terracotta oil lamps dating from the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Early Byzantine periods. The rich iconography on many of these common, everyday objects provides a rare look into daily life on Cyprus in antiquity and highlights the island’s participation in Roman artistic and cultural production. Each lamp is illustrated, and the accompanying text addresses typology, decoration, and makers’ marks on each of these objects that provide new insights into art, craft, and trade in the ancient Mediterranean.

This volume examines materials produced with the use of fire and mostly by use of the kiln (metals, plasters, glass and glaze, aromatics). The technologies based on fire have been considered high-tech technologies and they have contributed to the evolution of man throughout history.
